Clinical Educator
Current
Subject Matter Expert/Project Advisor
CurrentSME for clinical projects for AI micro learning product Forget Me Not which uses AI adaptive learning in a spaced repetition approach. In 2024 I supported the team with an ARIIA research grant re dementia micro learning.
Manager, Clinical Learning & Engagement
From October 2021 to November 2022 I took on a challenging role setting up a new clinical education team for a NFP with 2200 staff and around 500 student placements per year. This has extended to 12 aged care homes and regional home care support both metro and regional.During this time I also went through the inaugural ARIIA innovator training program and aged care partnership program, completed the My Home Life leadership program, and was one of 8 leaders who attended training with the Be Advice paradigm: founders of the De Hogyeweyk Dutch dementia village.I was lucky enough to become one of the senior People and Culture leaders in the organisation. I was successful in receiving a $200,000 grant to implement my research project on enabling design and dementia education and this will be rolled out at the organisation over the next year. The small team of amazing clinicians and educators facilitates moves towards best practice as well as engagement and support of our greatest asset, our staff. Launching a new service in a large organisation is challenging and numerous successes have been achieved in a short time frame including improvements in safety, quality and compliance, improved student placement experience, reduced time to recruit students and future improvements should lead to higher engagement and retention of new graduate nurses.I am grateful to an incredible team who set the bar high for quality and safety in aged care in a VUCA environment. The team has worked very well within the broader P&C team in beginning a journey towards becoming a learning organisation.
Osteoporosis Nurse Educator (Sa/Nt)
Representing Amgen Australia Pty Ltd.Registered Nurse / Nurse Educator role undertaking promotion and delivery of educational programmes to health care professionals within primary care settings and assisting with implementation of patient screening and chronic disease management for Amgen REFRAME Osteoporosis Program (Prime Awards - Best Public Health Project, Australia).
Executive Manager, Workforce Development
Head of department for workforce strategy, education and training and culture. Site Manager of a home during pandemic due to restriction on management movement across homes.IPC lead, dementia lead. 4 papers published in AJDC. Transformed the learning environment and staff engagement with successful compliance, yet much better made the home fun to work at and a better home for residents to live in.Opened the doors to the MSUs at both homes and empowered and coached clinical staff to become leaders.
Quality Surveyor
Temporary contract post via Programmed Health Professionals. Registered quality surveyor, working within teams undertaking assessment contacts and accreditation audits in SA and NT.
Nurse Educator (National Vaccine Education Program)
I initially worked on an 8 month project delivering exceptional education and support to clinicians with Hahn Healthcare's national vaccines education team on behalf of their major client GSK and the National Immunisation Program. This new, autonomous role in South Australia supported health care professionals in primary health with changes to the rotavirus vaccination on the National Immunisation Program. Following an extremely successful transition, with 100% of target providers in SA voicing confidence with the new schedule (Rotarix), the role was broadened to support providers with education around other GSK vaccines: Rabipur (rabies) and Menveo (Meningococcal ACWY), which has become the only ACWY vaccine approved for babies of 2 months upwards at a time when the epidemiology of meningococcal disease is unpredictable (W strain cases exceeded B strain cases in Australia in 2016).I was delighted to be asked to work with Hahn on behalf of GSK again between February and April, providing support and preparation for the 2018 influenza season for hospitals and health centres in New South Wales and South Australia. This project achieved 100% of KPs in supporting hospitals across SA and NSW with the use of Fluarix Tetra as the influenza vaccination for the Health Care Worker immunisation program.
Dementia Educator (National Program)
Working within the Dementia Training Study Centre in South Australia, part of the peak body for dementia care in Australia, I was funded for 8 months to roll out a national project: 'The portrait, the mirror and the landscape: working with responsive behaviours." This full day multi-disciplinary workshop was a joint objective of the Dementia Training Study Centres (DTSC), Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service (DBMAS) and Dementia Collaborative Research Centres (DCRC), led by DTSC in SA/NT. The advanced workshop uses problem solving, role play and case studies to challenge thinking in dementia care and targets Doctors, Nurses, Social Workers, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists involved in the care of people with dementia.
Research Study Manager (Aboriginal Diabetes)
As Study Manager of PROPHECY: Predicting Renal, Ophthalmic and Heart Events in Aboriginal communities (The Aboriginal Diabetes Study) I reported directly to Theme Leader, Professor Alex Brown. The role involved project management on this landmark and unique study of 4,000 Aboriginal South Australians - a complex and large scale longitudinal cohort study which will make a real difference to the lives of Aboriginal communities.I was able to advance the study from inception to launch despite significant barriers to progress and felt at 6 months, as the study was moving into a new phase, the time was right to follow different challenges, having successfully completed its 'marketing' phase.I learned much from this project, notably working with and managing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, negotiating with stakeholders from Aboriginal communities, and marketing an academic study to the broader public and to Aboriginal communities and individuals.I was successful in developing a 'brand' image for the study, along with its new name, and achieved success with the small operational and clinical team I lead.Although the project was brief, I gained and achieved much, and left the study in a very much more advanced situation than on arrival and with a clinical team that is clearly focussed and motivated to achieve results.I developed a very successful marketing and communications strategy which leaves the project in a strong position to recruit community members over the next phase.
Ceo
Following consecutive promotions from Blended Learning Solutions Manager to Chief Operating Officer and then CEO, over a period of 23 months I developed a fledgling start up into a genuine market leader in CPR, Manual Handling and First Aid training for University students, while consolidating a market for medication safety and midwifery education online. Having complete responsibility and accountability for determining core business, building strategic partnerships (e.g. with Open Universities Australia), recruiting and motivating a small team and relocating to new offices, the role was challenging and the learning curve steep. On my appointment the company was a small partnership without a 3 year plan or strategic vision and was rapidly transformed into a lean and focussed company. The team I brought in quickly established new markets for new brands we developed and the rise in credibility in WA in particular has been dramatic.I left the company in a far stronger structural and corporate position than when I joined and left in order to further harness my skills and experience with a Not for Profit organisation and a Centre of Excellence.
National Education And Training Manager (& Ceo Of Nursed - Registered Training Organisation).
As manager of Healthcare Australia's National Education Unit (NEU) I provided leadership on best practice for 6000 plus active carers, nurses and midwives.I planned, developed and established national roll-out of education and compliance initiatives which provided all HCA carers, nurses and midwives with high quality education and training. I ensuredthe bar was set for education and training of agency staff at unprecedented levels for HCA.Concurrently I was CEO of HCAs Registered Training Organisation (NursED) and developed and ran the Diploma of Nursing and Cert III Aged Care courses as well as successfully steering the company through regulatory audits in the VET sector).
Award-Winning Critical Care Clinical Nurse Consultant
I was one of two Clinical Nurse Consultants who developed a unique after hours Patient at Risk Team with the support and guidance of the Director of Nursing, A/Prof Pat Snowden. The Clinical Nurse Consultant would respond to any call for advice or assistance with patients at risk of deteriorating on general wards. The role was an expert clinician role with liaison with Consultants and ICU medical staff to rapidly transfer patients in need of higher level care as indicated. The role won first prize in the 2008 Innovative Practice in the Private Sector Awards (Private Hospitals Association of Queensland). As an aid to nursing staff a Modified Early Warning System was also developed which served as a tool to detect deterioration and trigger response. A paper on the development of the MEWS was published in 2008. Data showed medical emergencies fell by 28%, cardiac arrests by 50% and unexpected deaths (pre-ICU) fell by 66% as a result of the innovation, and these data were maintained between 2008-2010.
Critical Care Nurse (Icu, Ccu)
I worked as a critical care nurse in a number of intensive therapy and coronary care units in the UK and intensive care units in New Zealand and Australia, gaining a strong awareness of the needs of highly dependent patients and their families.
Research Charge Nurse (Grade H)
Involved as a research nurse collecting genetic data (pedigrees and biological samples) for studies investigating the role of the genes fibrillin (I and II) in Marfan's Syndrome and Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.
Research Charge Nurse: Whitehall Ii (Stress And Health) Study
The Whitehall II study was set up in 1985 by Professor Sir Michael Marmot to investigate the importance of social class for health by following a cohort of 10,308 working men and women. As a research charge nurse I worked closely with Dr Harry Hemingway and Dr Eric Brunner on epidemiolgical research into social class influences on Coronary Heart Disease. I was co-author on papers published in the British Medical Journal and Circulation.During this time I was also a secretariat member of the first NHS National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease, lead by Professor Sir Michael Marmot.
