Clinical Nurse Manager 2
My role as a CNM2 has been in Acute Adult Mental Health. Key aspects of this role are;1. Ensure that all nursing practice is carried out in line with NMBI standards and the Mental Health Act 2001. I have taken a project management approach to mental health act compliance on the ward, with focus on the Judgement Support Framework. The development of teams to approach different elements of the framework and Codes of Practice.2. Perform nursing duties utilising and incorporating into practice the the Saint John of God Hospital values of Hospitality, Respect, Justice, Compassion and Excellence. I believe it is hugely important to be visible putting these values into practice. However, I have to admit practice is key. Mental health nursing offers challenges daily. Varying and intense challenges, that require me to remind myself of these values and demonstrate through their use how they can improve the experience of service users.3. Promote and utilise the Recovery and Safewards models in nursing practice. Utilising the Safewards Model within the hospital promotes greater service user involvement and staff learning, with the aim of reducing conflict and containment.4. Ongoing commitment to Continuous Quality Improvement. Through audit of nursing practice, identify areas for improvement to better the service user experience in the hospital. Be involved in relevant committees to this role and drive through developments in nursing care.5. Promote a high quality learning environment that provides an atmosphere full of opportunities for learning for student and staff nurses. Provide supervision and preceptorship to nursing students. Conduct staff probation reviews and PDR's. 6. Develop strong relationships with other departments within the hospital - accommodation, catering, pharmacy and medicines, occupational therapy, social work, technical services, administration and accounting. These relationships allow for greater exploration of methods to improve patient care.

Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse In Camhs
In this role I worked in an inpatient unit for young people aged 10-17 years old. Compared to other areas in which I have worked, I was more active and involved with this client group (probably because young people are always on the go). Much of the day was spent engaging with clients through activities that promote social interaction and skills building. Each day I would spend one to one time with the young people to whom I was key nurse. Other facets of this position involved working closely with other multi-disciplinary team members and families to address the complex issues that the client group are confronted with, such as; Anxiety, Depression, Eating Disorders, Asperger syndrome, Psychosis, Self harm, Familial disharmony, Emotional dysregulation and impulsivity.I was part of the working group developing a psycho-education group programme that focused on health promotion and well-being. My particular focus was on sleep disturbance and sleep hygiene. Before I moved to my next post I was in the process of reviewing the Smoking Policy within the unit in consultation with other MDT members, to bring the inpatient into line with other hospitals and services across the country.

From what I have heard most nurses do not like this as they have to adjust to new environments regularily. However this is the biggest skill I have gained from On Call Nursing. I have to adapt quickly and slot into the nursing team or I am of no use. The result of this is that I have to apply a varied range of skills and depending on the type of service user, I have to modify the same skills to suit the task at hand. For me this ensures I do not become deskilled in any area of my practice.
