As a member of Wagga City Council’s Safety Team, comprising of two other employees, the keyresponsibilities in my role are:• Developing and maintaining Council’s work health and safety systems including Work Health and Safety Management, workers compensation, rehabilitation, risk management and health and safety audit systems, procedures and processes;• Assisting in administering return-to-work programs to ensure best recovery and insurance premium;• Assisting in the review, maintenance and monitoring of Council’s work health and safety systems, procedures and processors including its risk management strategies;• Developing positive internal relationships to actively reinforce and promote work health and safety and work in partnership with directorates and WHS representatives;• Being actively involved in the development of external relationships with key stakeholders including; StateCover, Work Safe NSW, and rehabilitation and allied health providers;• Working collaboratively with the People & Culture team in relation to employee induction, education and compliance in relation to work health and safety.

As part of my Honours degree I completed a research report in conjunction with the Construction Strategy Unit from WHSQ on young workers in the construction industry. To complete this report I was required to perform the following duties:• Organise and participate in meetings with representatives from the Construction Strategy Unit;• Research the current literature of the behaviours and attitudes of young workers;• Develop and distribute a survey to the construction industry in Queensland;• Critically analyse data received from survey and identify trends within the results;• Communicate via telephone with specific individuals from the survey to obtain further information;• Professionally construct a comprehensive report on current knowledge, identified trends, suggestions for further development and conclusions on young workers in the construction industry.

Boyne Island Aluminium Smelter

Working with 5 other employees in the Health and Hygiene department of the smelters safety division, I had diverse roles and responsibilities, including:• Developing and delivery safety training packages and presentations;• Ensuring state and national Health and Safety legislation was being met;• Undertaking hygiene monitoring, including noise, inhalable and respirable dust and vibration;• Analysing and interpreting hygiene monitoring data, critiquing against legislation and preparing finalised reports of results;• Consulting and working with individuals across all levels of the organisation on safety related issues and enforcing policies and procedures;• Investigating accidents that occurred on site and outlining strategies in reports to prevent furtherincidents occurring;• Performing risk assessments both individually and within groups to avoid incidents;• Leading an AS4801 audit on the company’s management system and hazardous chemicals audits in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Regulations.
