I then statistically analyzed sequence inferences to understand the effect of each model parameter and visualized the results to summarize key findings.• Identified the rate limiting steps for modern and ancestral Cryptosporidium lactate and malate dehydrogenases to study the evolution of enzyme mechanisms using spectrophotometric single- and multiple-turnover assays.• Resurrected ancestral enzymes and characterized their thermal stability and activity as a potential tool for protein engineering. I found enzymes that displayed high activity and stability, which are desirable traits for industrial applications.
