About Michael Smith
I'm a scientist, modeller, data analyst, and decision specialist. My primary interests are using mathematical and statistical modelling to improve the management of human systems and natural resources. During my research career I've used modelling to improve strategic planning for skilled workforces, guide decision-making in ocean ecosystems, understand drivers of individual behaviour in coastal communities, and assess the viability of different climate change mitigation strategies. I have provided advanced modelling and data analysis services to governments, corporations, and other groups to facilitate adaptive management. These days I mostly build models for demand and optimal resource allocation.

During this period I performed ecosystem modelling of NPZD foodwebs, using agent-based modelling (IBMs) and differential simulation models (ERSEM-GOTM).I also modelled the potential contribution of pelagic tunicates to vertical nutrient flux in oligotrophic conditions, and undertook economic risk-assessment to compare the viability of different climate change mitigation strategies.Other research included economic analysis on the differential cost/benefit scaling for alternative… Show more During this period I performed ecosystem modelling of NPZD foodwebs, using agent-based modelling (IBMs) and differential simulation models (ERSEM-GOTM).I also modelled the potential contribution of pelagic tunicates to vertical nutrient flux in oligotrophic conditions, and undertook economic risk-assessment to compare the viability of different climate change mitigation strategies.Other research included economic analysis on the differential cost/benefit scaling for alternative carbon sequestration technologies based on longevity of capture and risk of accidental release. My PhD research involved designing and building a whole-of-system ecological model of the southern Benguela region (including hydrodynamic forcing, the entire biological ecosystem, and human exploitation through multiple fisheries). I studied the use of fisheries and survey indicators to assess ecosystem health; using multiple models to perform assumption testing on large-scale ecosystem processes; trophic-based functional guilds for ecosystem modelling; and the interaction effects of multiple… Show more My PhD research involved designing and building a whole-of-system ecological model of the southern Benguela region (including hydrodynamic forcing, the entire biological ecosystem, and human exploitation through multiple fisheries). Research Scientist
I was responsible for designing, building and implementing ecosystem models to study the effects of nutrient addition to marine systems. The project was aimed at food security and climate change mitigation.I built an NPZD model off the North-West Shelf of Australia in the ERSEM-GOTM framework (implemented in FORTRAN), and used it to explore the effects of open-ocean nitrogen addition on the carbon cycle. I wrote a custom modelling framework for open-ocean plankton modelling… Show more I was responsible for designing, building and implementing ecosystem models to study the effects of nutrient addition to marine systems.
