Educators International is a niche international charity (registered in the UK) working at system level through specialist professional volunteers to raise standards of attainment for children and young people in developing countries. We have developed unique tools applying modern technology (especially teachers' phones and a linked mini-printer) to raise standards of pedagogy and accurate continuous assessment of learners' progress. We collect big data generated at teacher level which enables schools to track and improve their own standards rapidly and sustainably. Our first project, upgrading vocational colleges in Uttar Pradesh, was completed in April 2012 but since then we have focused on literacy and numeracy for early years and P1-6 in remote and under-resourced primary schools across Africa, Asia and the Pacific islands.

I am one of 4 Directors of Salix Finance, an independent, publicly funded company dedicated to providing the public sector with loans for energy efficiency projects. . Salix provides interest-free Government funding to the public sector in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills. Its total cost of funding is under 1.5% from inception of a loan to full payback years later. Last year Salix saved the public sector £181 million in energy bills and also saved nearly one million tonnes of CO2, making a substantial contribution towards the UK's climate change commitments.

This cross-Government project, funded by DfE, DH and DFID and backed by Cabinet Office and Treasury, supports UK public servants who volunteered in a developing country for an extended period (6-24 months) and have since returned to any UK public service job, by paying their missed pension contributions (employer and employee). The scheme closed in April 2011 to new departures, but was succeeded for NHS personnel by the DFID-funded Health Partnership Scheme, under a Direction issued by the Department of Health. I am the pensions manager for both schemes.

Successively, headed five different Divisions and Directorates within the Department, most recently: Head of Narrowing the Gaps (policy and delivery) which resulted in greatly reduced attainment gaps within schools by ethnicity, poverty and disadvantage.

Working for the Nyae Nyae Conservancy and WIMSA building pre-schools in very remote desert locations, for and with these semi-nomadic people. Managed first-ever democratic election of a Chief of the Khwe people of the Caprivi Strip (2006).

National Director, Adult Skills; previously, National Director of Planning. The Learning and Skills Council was responsible for all post 16 sub-university level education and training in England, spending some £20 billion a year on adult training. Over a million post-19 learners gained qualifications through the LSC's funding.
