The role provides long term strategic direction and leadership in health and safety, security and business continuity for a medical research organisation covering 28 units and 4,500 staff in the UK and Africa. I lead a team of over 30 health and safety professionals, 3 as direct line manager, providing a value based service to the organisation. My team provide a central planning, policy development and assurance role as well as support to units. Each member of the team provides expertise in a particular technical discipline (chemistry, radiation, microbiology, genetic modification) and different HSS competencies which may be called upon by any unit. Introduced a business planning approach to health and safety management into a public funded body.Turned round the organisation to become a benchmark sector leader in good health and safety practice. Achieved an 50% reduction in all accidents and a 70% reduction in lost time accidentsDeveloped and implemented a business continuity planning programme for all MRC research units. Nominated for the Business Continuity Strategy Award.
