My first student placement with the University of Hertfordshire was with Clore Shalom Primary School, a Jewish Primary School in Shenley, a village near London Colney, Hertfordshire. This 11-week placement had me assigned to the Year 6 class of 28 boys and girls between 10 and 11 years old. Among the subjects that I taught were English, mathematics, history, computing and especially science. The students ranged greatly in their skill levels across many of the subject areas, some assessed at Year 4 level in English and mathematics, and some assessed as high as Year 9. As such, I had a great opportunity to learn how to incorporate differentiation into my lessons and to assess children using a variety of methods, from peer and self assessment to use of written assignments and one-on-one work.In addition, the training afforded me the opportunity to create a series of lesson plans around many aspects of the new 2014 National Curriculum, specifically in the subjects of Science and Computing. I created new lessons for an overview of databases using the school's resource of a student-based computing software site called Purple Mash. I also had the opportunity to use National Curriculum guidelines and book/online resources (especially the Hamilton Trust) to create lesson plans around the new evolution and human circulatory system science topics. These were successful enough that many of the pupils in the Year 6 classroom expressed excitement every day that science lessons were being held.I discovered that I have a great strength in science teaching, which I was unaware of before the placement. I am eager to begin my next placement where I can develop myself even more as a teacher in differentiation, assessment, pedagogy and behaviour management.

I assisted the collections manager in an inventory of the social collections for over a year, then switched to data entry and artefact accessioning. I ended my volunteering in order to do a full-time course with the University of Hertfordshire.
