As an Automation Engineer within the Platform Services team, I am responsible for the development and support of Sky Betting & Gaming’s internal PaaS toolset, working with Chef, Ruby, Test Kitchen, Jenkins, git, VMWare, AWS, Packer and Red Hat Linux.

Howden

As a member of the DevOps team, I am responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation and maintenance of systems hardware and software, utilising technologies such as Chef to provide centrally distributed application provisioning and configuration.I participate in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure, aiming to find the best configuration of applications and services to effectively serve the business.I assist project teams with technical issues, including the definition of needs, benefits, and technical strategy; research and development within the project lifecycle; technical analysis and design and support of operations staff in executing, testing and rolling out the solutions, benefitting from a suite of tools such as JIRA, Bamboo, Apache ANT, Git and Mercurial.I help automate the build and release management processes and procedures, building and developing an Agile system operations team.I have worked with developers and operations teams to provision, implement and deliver key applications to the business such as SNAP.PA, a prominent new digital news platform used to deliver popular content.I have been involved in a major infrastructure project involving building out entirely new environments and working with various teams to ensure the full and accurate transitioning of services.

Howden

As part of the Systems Administration team, I was responsible for maintaining an extensive and diverse infrastructure, supporting key media delivery systems. I worked to ensure the successful operation of numerous applications, hosted both internally and externally on managed platforms, running on operating systems spanning Windows Server, Red Hat Linux and Solaris. Services included news content delivery, sports data and weather forecasting to a wide range of customers. Timely and accurate delivery of the data was a key focus of the services supported by the System Administration team. Worked on developing systems to assist with data gathering, such as centralised log ingestion, server and service inventories and working with the monitoring system to extract and interpret monitoring data as graphs and reports. Worked with technologies such as Perl, Apache, MySQL and Microsoft SQL and JBoss.

Grimsby

Working as part of the Midrange engineering team, I provide UNIX/Linux support on a number of accounts, including Swiss Re, Urenco, Trafigura and the Findus Group. I work on large cloud based enterprise installations as both a support engineer and a project team member. I have been involved in the installation and automation of Red Hat server installations using kickstart, partitioning and configuration of newly installed servers forming GPU based grid computing farm environments and provide ongoing support for these environments. I work to maintain server infrastructures based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5/6, AIX 5/6 as well as Solaris and HPUX. Daily responsibilities include monitoring resource levels of all servers, maintaining patching levels on a regular basis and troubleshooting problems based on both raised alerts and support tickets raised by end users.

Grimsby

I had two roles in the IT department. As an operator, I worked to monitor and maintain the group-wide infrastructure, comprising of IBM ESX servers running VMware/Wintel and a number of IBM Power servers running AIX LPARs. I worked to improve reliability of systems and to extend and automate monitoring processes to improve the quality and speed of daily monitoring checks. This included out of hours monitoring. As part of the Service Desk, I took calls from the business, logging and resolving incidents where possible at a first, second line and sometimes third line level wherever appropriate in accordance with pre-defined SLAs.

As part of my university course, I worked in the IT Operations team, maintaining the infrastructure and supporting the user base for a large geographic region covering southern and eastern Europe. Supporting a Solaris 8 and 9 infrastructure, I worked on the second line team working on both implementation, maintenance and support of the infrastructure. During my time in this role, I became familiar with many skills that I would go on to continue to develop at university and with the Findus Group, such UNIX system administration skills.
