Over the course of 32 years of structural engineering, Mike has enjoyed a balanced mix of new design; evaluation and rehabilitation of existing construction; and applied R&D, code development, and education. He has developed special expertise in seismic design, foundation analysis and design, and development of codes and standards. In recent years Mike has been a key participant in the development of performance-based seismic design approaches, and he has applied those approaches to both new and existing construction, especially for highrise buildings and where enhanced seismic performance is desired (as for hospitals and other essential facilities).Mike has worked on several Applied Technology Council projects as a reviewer, a technical contributor, or Project Director. He has also been funded by FEMA to serve as a writer and technical editor for several seismic design documents including FEMA 356, FEMA 450, FEMA 451, ASCE 7-05, ASCE 41, and the 2009 NEHRP Recommended Provisions, Commentary, Design Examples, and Instruction Materials.
