It started at the age of 7, formatting floppy disks for my Dad and running kids PC games from DOS prompt instead of playing with toys. I remember the excitement of bulletin boards, or the joy of watching the Netscape icon cycle through as the air was filled with the shrill song of dial up on a 56k fax modem before loading a static page to the monitor. Installing a new hardware was more exciting than going to the toy store. My fate was sealed.Later on MIDI would steal my heart, propelling me to daisy chaining keyboards and struggling with music software. Even as a glassblower in my mid-20's, muscle-memory would take over and I could get lost in the flame and think about how to customize my clunky 'PC' so I could work on some experimental-electronic music project. Even when playing a synthesizer, wearing a mask with limited vision in a dark club or living-room somewhere, the absurdly loud PA speakers that I was playing through were not enough to deter focus from making sure that some artsy visual/audio thing I programmed in Pure Data would execute properly. It seemed inevitable that software development would have come about much earlier, and perhaps in a parallel universe it actually did. But it wasn't til about 2015 when I discovered Python. I didn't know what to do with it at the time, other than make a command-line style Star Trek-based 'choose your own adventure' game, so I turned to JavaScript. It started out slow at first- then I thought "Hmm. I wonder if I could make a virtual synthesizer in JavaScript?", which is when I recalled the joy of losing sleep and found myself waking up excited to code, like a kid on Xmas morning eagerly installing several disks of some cheesy PC adventure game. Eventually I worked on more projects, went through online courses, got hooked on React, and then got into the Tech Talent South coding boot-camp. So yeah, thanks to tech I guess I'm beholden to the impending birth of Roko's Basilisk.
