As mapping lead was responsible for leading teams of scientists and technicians in the collection and processing of bathymetry, backscatter and water column data and planning remotely operated vehicle dives. Includes training of Explorers in Training and students from NOAA’s Educational Partnership Program, hosting of international scientists and hosting off-shore NOAA Teachers at Sea. The mapping lead provides data QA/QC, submits data to the national archives, and designs and visualizes custom data products using GIS and hydrographic software. Produces final mapping expedition reports with quantifiable metrics, statistics and syntheses of new discoveries. As expedition coordinator was responsible for all aspects of cruise planning, execution and reporting. The coordinator must be able to communicate with the science community, inter-agency and cross-NOAA partners, and members of the general public about NOAA Ocean Exploration missions. This includes writing and reviewing technical and scientific reports as well as non-technical materials for the general public, conducting interviews with media, hosting public outreach events, and speaking at scientific conferences. The expedition coordinator strategically coordinates with cruise participants from academia, commercial and government agencies in order to deploy NOAA assets in the most opportunistic and tactical ways to meet U.S. ocean exploration priorities. Technical assets include deepwater mapping systems and remotely operated vehicles and the procurement and testing of new ocean hardware and software, developing and documenting standard operating procedures and the effective leveraging of partnerships such as Cooperative Research and Development Agreements. During the cruise planning and execution phases, the expedition coordinator is the primary liaison through telepresence between the ocean exploration community, largely located onshore, and the offshore technicians and scientists.
