The South Australian Network of Drug and Alcohol Services (SANDAS) was established in 2004, to enhance community wellbeing and reduce the harms associated with alcohol and drug use.As the peak body, we provide independent, state-wide representation, advocacy and support for non-government organisations working in the alcohol and other drug sector, through networking and policy development.SANDAS is a not-for-profit association funded by the Department of Health, Drug and Alcohol Services of South Australia, the South Australian Department of Health and the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education, on a project basis.

The National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) is an internationally recognised research centre that works as a catalyst for change in the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) field. The promotion of Workforce Development (WFD) principles, research and evaluation of effective practices is NCETA’s core business.Michael’s work included a focus on the intersection between alcohol and other drugs and the wider welfare system with an emphasis on engaging with child welfare, domestic violence and family support services. Responsible for working with the Centre on the development of Protecting and Nuturing Australia's Children: Building Capacity' Building Bridges, a three year national project to advance the capcity of adult and child focussed services to work more effectively together. Government Skills Australia is the industry skills council responsible for the maintenance of a range of training packages supporting the delivery of competency based vocational education and training to the government, essential services and public safety sectors nationally.The Public Safety Training Package consists of a range of qualifications covering police, fire, defence, emergency services, search and rescue and surf lifesaving job roles. As Project Manager I was responsible for reviewing and implementing a project plan to ensure that all competencies were reviewed and updated in line with industry requirements. The project was funded by DEEWR and overseen by a bi-partisan committee representing employers and unions from each sub-sector. Significant outcomes achieved included a full review of project plans and budgets, identification and amelioration of budget over and under spends, developing a policy paper on the replacement of industry specific first aid units with generic national units and a significant review of major Training Package components.

The Community Services and Health Industry Training Board was the leading provider of industry intelligence and advice to government, community service organisations and training providers on issues relating to workforce planning, skills development and learning for the vocational education and training sector in Victoria. The Board was bipartisan with 11 industry and 11 union representatives and 2 key stakeholder representatives.Key outputs included:• 2008 Community Services and Health Industry Training Awards – 9 awards celebration leadership, innovation, lifelong learning and excellence in vocational education and training, gala dinner with 430 guests, Ministerial hosting and separate Ministerial Reception for nominees• Convened the 2008 Skilled for Life – Skilled for Change 2 day Conference, keynote by Secretary DHS• Developed the 2008 Industry Drivers Report – a compilation of industry intelligence relating to workforce change, skills demand and training supply in Victoria• Completion of major projects relating to learning needs analysis, learning and development and competency development for Department of Human Services - Disability and Workforce Development units• Financial management of a budget in the region of $850k, with 80% fee for service• Management of a team of four full time staff and consultants• Representation of the Board at a range of sectoral, departmental and organisational meetings and committees• Presentations at state and national conferences, forums and events on issues relating to workforce development, training supply and demand, recruitment and retention, Vocational Education and quality issues.• Delivery of projects relating to quality improvement in disability services, Aboriginal Health Worker competencies, workforce demand issues in oral health and service improvement in aged care.

The CECFW is the peak body for child, youth and family services in Victoria. It had 95 community service organisation (CSO) members, covering over 95% of services to vulnerable children, young people and families in Victoria. • Sector Representation and Advocacy–represented Centre and sector on a range of committees:o Community Services and Health Industry Training Board - Chairperson, deputy chairperson and member (from 2001)o State-wide Child Protection and Juvenile Justice Training Reference Groupso Chair Resi Care Learning and Development Strategy Reference Group (RCLDS) and the TAFE-RTO/DHS/CSO Network o Chair, Centre Training Reference Group o Other committees and reference groups providing advice to DHS and CSOs on training. o Presented at state and national conferences on learning and development issues, quality improvement and management • Management of trainers, project and office support staff and consultants, grew team from 1.5 to 6 EFT.• Coordination, development, delivery of the Fee for Service Program including nationally accredited Dip in Bus Quality Auditing, Frontline Management and Voc Grad Cert in Community Services Quality Improvement. • Managed marketing, participant records, client liaison, delivery over 70 programs p.a. • Organisational Registration - established and maintained organisation as a registered training provider including accreditation (2001) and re-accreditation (2005). • Consultancy - delivered tailored services to clients e.g. DHS, CSOs, local government, health services, Maldives Government, CECFW members etc. on: leadership, management, governance, change, conflict resolution and communication skills. • Quality –primary responsibility for Centre’s internal and sectoral quality strategies, including representation at DHS/CSO reference groups, project management, learning circles, development of implementation strategies, funding advocacy and providing advice to member organisations, CEO and board.

REFS was a family mediation and training service that utilised a unique adult/young person model to undertake parent/adolescent mediations. The Training and Consultancy unit ran mediation and conflict resolution training, schools programs, consultancies and training on leadership, management and governance for government and non-government organisations. Training and consultancies were delivered in most states in Australia.Under my leadership the Training Unit grew from 1.5 EFT to over 5 EFT.

Delivered training in communication, conflict resolution, management and change. Undertook workplace mediations. Facilitated "Fit for Work' programs in workplaces and remote area mine sites.
