In this role I am accountable for planning, scheduling and coordinating the production of Australian Steel to the exacting standards required for submarine steels and the exhaustive chemical and mechanical testing that goes with this program. My key focus initially involved understanding the complex and unique requirements for the Submarine Steels, as well as the extensive Specification s and Regulatory compliances required. In working with my French colleagues, I built up a strong understanding of what was required of the submarine steel from their perspective. To this end, I spent time in France at the Fabrication location and in the Steelmaking centers. Armed with this knowledge & experience, I then was involved in approaching Australian Steelmakers to gauge their ability, competence and interest in taking part in the challenging development of this unique alloy variant of the French Submarine steel. This involved extensive auditing, process mapping of the production path, evaluating Technical skills available and identification of the process changes required to successfully produce these unique steels locally. When the theoretical challenges had been discussed at length and in detail, and then agreed upon, production was scheduled. Trial production went ahead under strict guidelines with key witness points identified and acted upon. The steel was produced in accordance with the set specifications and processes, and ran with a minimum of process issues. Samples were taken and sent for laboratory testing to ensure compliance with the challenging specifications that had been agreed upon. Mechanical testing proved successful and the project has now moved forward into a second production phase. And Explosive Blast Testing regime was developed and successfully passed by the locally produced alloy. Show less

With the majority of my contract work covered by CBMM, I was accountable for providing technical expertise to the steel industry throughout SE Asia and globally; specifically regarding high technology advances such as Micro-alloying, bringing University level metallurgy into the realm of production. My key focus initially involved approaching steel producers about improvements to alloy designs and processes, product development, mill auditing, metallurgical and microstructural analysis, to achieve a product that was superior to the current product being sold in the market place.I then oversaw the higher level metallurgy being successfully promoted and supported, from Standards clarifications and improvements, building codes and construction policies, additional research and development, and Supply Chain knowledge enhancement and motivation to progress. I believe if you can do something really well, and be the best, then why settle for a minimum “required” level as mandated by Standards? You need to be able to explain and demonstrate why your product is the best, not just “adequate”, and that it should be used in preference to a competitors.Key Achievements:- Alloy design, supervision of rolling of micro-alloyed S460 H-beam at Hyundai Incheon plant - Alloy design, ingot casting and ring rolling of 5.2 m round steel rings for Ball Mill construction at Hengrun Ring Forging Co, Ltd, Wuxi, China- Development and rolling of Niobium micro-alloyed H-beam at Onesteel Whyalla with high toughness at low temperatures. - Alloy design, melting and casting of micro-alloyed S600 Steel billets at KISCO Kunming China- Development and hot rolling of Niobium & Vanadium micro-alloyed S600 Rebar at Amsteel, Malaysia Show less
