Did you know that over 1,000 manufacturers operate out of Morris County and over 11,500 are in the state of New Jersey? Most people outside our industry believe China and other parts of the world have taken over manufacturing. Manufacturers have a big impact on our local and state-wide economies. As the program manager for NJMEP, I educate people about the manufacturing industry and the myriad of jobs available within its sector. The talent stream for manufacturing jobs is limited, causing a challenge for manufacturers in NJ. I am on a mission to change that. I am working to bring more awareness about the job opportunities in manufacturing. I meet with superintendents of grammar schools, high schools, strategic partners, youth group leaders, parent groups and more. I know I am effective when I more of our youth is considering a career path in manufacturing, and more people appreciate the pride and dedication that working in this sector brings to an employee and to our local economy. Our younger generations are unaware of the varied careers in manufacturing. Parents, educators, and most people who can influence our youth typically do not encourage or raise awareness about how a career path in manufacturing could be lucrative, rewarding and stable. Manufacturing is enjoying a renaissance. Robotics and state of the art processes using highly skilled workers have become the new normal. The skill set for an entry level position at a manufacturing company is multifaceted and the opportunity for advancement is better than ever. Unlike many other professions, working in manufacturing does not require a college degree. Companies are providing apprenticeship opportunities as well as training options you wouldn't see in typical Corporate America. There are several positions within manufacturing companies that mirror those in non-manufacturing companies including marketing, supply chain, administrative, finance, human resources, and more. Manufacturing companies take pride in investing in their employees. Training and development is at the forefront are often core values of the organization. The average age of a manufacturing employee today is over 55. Therefore, having a talent stream to replace this aging workforce is important. In the United States over 2.4 million jobs will be available in this sector within the next 6 years due to retirements and a major skills gap issue. Let's work together to help our manufacturers thrive in New Jersey. Thank you for reading my profile.
