About Michael Bishop
I'm presently enjoying some time off, having taken an early retirement package from HP. However, while I'm recharging, I'll seriously consider new opportunities to lead and work with an experienced, professional software development team.My primary area of expertise is designing/implementing scalable and reliable operating system, and application software - for general purpose use, or embedded devices. I am technically adept at creating elegant designs, and producing usable, manageable, and reliable software components that implement those designs. My basic approach: Understand a problem thoroughly, including a deep analysis via real use-cases. After analysis, craft a design that meets the current requirements, and does not limit future extensions. Build out the system incrementally, and provide automated tests during each development cycle. This allows the team to demonstrate the value of the design, and to demonstrate real capability, system reliability, and the overall usefulness of the product - through each iteration of the implementation. If the design approach is correct, very little code should have to be rewritten. In my experience, lots of code rewrites means that the design was not a good one to start with - or the analysis/design phase was skipped entirely - which inevitably leads to a hacking/prototyping approach to fill in for want of a professional design. Prototyping is still a good way to discover how to solve certain problems - but it is not a replacement for a carefully thought-out design. To sum up, my development philosophy can be expressed in three words: Design For Use.Although it seems an obvious concept, it is often overlooked in large-scale software projects - resulting in powerful programs trapped inside poorly integrated modules, and overly complex user interfaces. The last thing you want to hear from your customers is having them tell you they will not licence your software because it is not designed for use.Specialties: Over the past 32 years, I've worked intensely in almost every aspect of computer technology including, but not limited to: networking, telecommunications, OS development, storage solutions, compiler development, computer graphics, software architecture, component building, performance tuning, and all aspects of software testing.References available upon request.
