In his professional career,Mike Bradley was responsible for the Technology & Sustainability activities of Canfor Pulp and Paper for more than two decades. In his latest position he assumed overall responsibility for updating and developing the Sustainability Strategy for the company. He was a member of the Joint Solutions Process in BC, the partnership between environmental groups and industry which ultimately led to the groundbreaking “Great Bear Rainforest Agreement”. He was also a member of a panel convened by the British Columbia provincial government to recommend an approach for the province in dealing with climate change. Prior to joining Canfor, Mike worked with other pulp and paper manufacturers in Canada and in Europe. Educated in the United Kingdom, he is a passionate believer in trying to bring fundamental technical understanding to complex technical and environmental challenges, subscribing to Kelvins’ dictum that if we haven’t measured something, we really don’t properly understand it. He is a member of TAPPI (Technical Association of Pulp and Paper Industry), SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicologists and Chemists), PAPTAC (Paper Technical association of Canada), IASPM (International Association of Scientific Papermakers). He has been a reviewer for the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment.In 2013 he received the Georg Jayme Medallion from Zellcheming, the technical-scientific professional association for the chemical pulp industry and the paper industry in Germany.In 2015 he was awarded a PAPTAC Fellowship and an FPAC Life-time Achievment Award.Since retiring he has devoted much of his spare time to adult education on sustainability issues and science literacy on the Sunshine Coast of BC through his activities with the local Elder College. His family time is spent with Irene - his wife, our kids and our young grandchildren. Any time remaining free is spent on his hobbies of microscopy and astronomy.
