I served as a Public Affairs Officer at Navy Public Affairs Support Element East in Norfolk, VA. This command deploys PAOs with an operational detachment of Mass Communication Specialists to ships and commands around the world to fulfill their public affairs mission. From NPASE I deployed as the PAO for Amphibious Squadron Six aboard the USS Wasp (LHD 1) and as the Assistant PAO for Carrier Strike Group 9 aboard the USS George Washington (CVN 73). During the course of these two deployments, I did everything from organizing media engagements in South America to facilitating the Navy public affairs mission during Operation Odyssey Lighting, the U.S. airstrike operation against ISIS in Libya. I also worked as a media events planner for Fleet Week New York 2017 and Sail Boston 2017. For both events, I productively engaged top-tier media editors, reporters, and representatives earning media coverage for the Navy on shows from Fox and Friends to local coverage on WCVB Boston. The skill set I cultivated here honed my ability to tell an organization's story through traditional and emerging media. I helped plan massive public events, carry out the Navy's PA mission during air strike operations against ISIS, and led creative teams in producing content that highlighted the Navy's unique story.

I first joined the Navy to fly as a Naval Flight Officer . During the training, I directed 45 training missions in a T-6 Texan turboprop. Nothing tested my decision-making skills and attention to detail as much as those flights. After I successfully completed primary and intermediate training I was selected for advanced Navy Jet Training at Training Squadron 86 prior to making a career transition into public affairs, which turned out to be my true calling.

I began my working life getting up at 4:30 in the morning every day during summer to work for my father. At the time it was terrible but, looking back, it taught me more than I ever could have imagined. It's hard to let myself feel overworked or daunted when I started out as a 16-year old kid answering to superintendents and general contractors on job sites.I worked as a steel stud framer completing tenant improvements jobs in hospitals, medical facilities, residential buildings, and commercial facilities. My dad stole my tool bags when I left for the Navy...I'll get them back.
