I have written and edited for dozens of publications over the past 18 years, collaborating on large, special projects with other writers and designers; writing profiles of chefs, athletes, and music producers; and writing about cars and the automotive business.

I was brought to Rodale to help re-launch Mountain Bike magazine. The new magazine would have editorial that rivaled the storytelling of Outside, Men’s Journal, and National Geographic Adventure, and have a rich, aspirational look and feel—on a razor-thin budget. I was given only one other part-time staffer dedicated to Mountain Bike, but within two years we increased frequency from four to six issues, increased profitability and stayed on budget.I vastly expanded the caliber of writers and photographers and worked with our art staff to establish the right feel of illustration and photography. One front-of-book section, Eye Candy, was so cutting edge that magazines like Outside soon hijacked the style.

Produced automotive and lifestyle coverage (travel, food, wine, business tech).Helped grow Forbes.com/lifestyle into a huge profit sector for the site, writing and editing over 1,000 columns per year, including massive traffic stories like Top Ten Cars of the Year, and other lists which were (and still are) style touchstones for the Forbes brand. Appeared on national TV to talk about automotive/lifestyle topics, including the Today Show, CBS This Morning and CNN.

Oversaw front-of-book columns and essays on new gear; guided travel; books; helped steer the editing and production of annual best-of sections on adventure travel; roundups on skiing and snowboarding; climbing and hiking. Assigned, edited and oversaw special coverage. One project, on how to survive anything, won a National Magazine Award for the magazine in only its second year on the newsstand.

I edited fitness and grooming columns, personal finance, and created and wrote both Hardware (stuff for your garage) and the automotive sections.Worked on several special issues including one that won a National Magazine Award for the magazine called, How to Live Forever. For this section (and others) we tried unorthodox methods, including assigning noted fiction and science writers to do original reporting, and it caught the attention of our competition and the national media. We also broke major news (albeit two years ahead of schedule) with another special issue in the fall of 1998, predicting a major stock market crash.

I edited and wrote travel features; the automotive column; edited resort news items and gear roundups. Assigned/wrote a range of how-to travel stories, from booking tours to shooting great pictures to personal safety during travel to third-world countries.

I grew from the copy desk at this, my first magazine job, to writing 3,000-word profiles.
