Patch Operations and DeliveryThe Patch Operations and Delivery system was the System of Record for all patches provided by Sun Microsystems. It provided patch life cycle tracking, machine consumable meta-data, secure long-term storage and delivery mechanisms to the public Internet and Sun’s Corporate Intranet.As the Founder and Technical Lead of the Patch Operations and Delivery system, I was responsible for the technical direction of Sun Microsystems' patch repositories and delivery infrastructure; serving as a Division representative at Corporate level planning sessions and committees as well as a Corporate representative in customer feedback sessions.Within the team, some of my principal contributions included; proposing the project to upper management, recruiting the development staff, leading the team through 16 development cycles within a 4 year period, architecting a solution that reduced the world wide patch release time from > 48 hours to < 3 minutes (nominally), working cooperatively with SMI Operations staff to architect the system’s production hardware infrastructure, and serving as one of the team’s principle Software Development Engineers. In this capacity, contributions included functionality such as the global distribution of patch state invariant data, support for non-SVR4 patch types, the production of patch cross-reference metadata as well as the project’s database creation and build automation code.

ConfigDBThe ConfigDB system comprised the Explorer application, a parser for Explorer output which stored normalized systems information in an Oracle database, and a web based Servlet application used by Service Center personnel for examining customers’ system configurations.I had primary responsibility for the development and maintenance of the ConfigDB Parser and the system’s database. Additionally, I shared development responsibilities for the Explorer and web based Servlet applications.

Osmos DBMS & Universal RepositoryOsmos was a multi-platform, Object Relational and Object Oriented Database Management System; providing both SQL3 and Object Level Interfaces. Osmos’ Data Abstraction Layer (DAL) comprised a daemon and set of libraries that provided Object Relational and Object Oriented DBMS functionality to a conventional Relational DBMS (e.g. Oracle, Sybase).I had Primary Development and maintenance responsibility for Osmos’ Data Abstraction Layer (DAL) as well as secondary development responsibility for Osmos’ SQL and Call Level Interface (CLI / ODBC). Additionally, I designed and implemented thread safety into Osmos, DAL and Unisys’ Universal Repository.I also Mentored two less experienced team members, helping both a “new hire” and a “troubled employee” become effective contributors to their respective project teams.

COM.UnityThe Com.Unity project comprised a document management system designed for phone messaging and Internet documents such as Call Flows and Recordings, Online Chat Sessions, HTML documents, e-Mail messages, Internet News messages, plain text and binary files. It featured an object oriented virtual file system and browser which facilitated passing “virtual files” to and from conventional file based clients as well as customized client applications.My contributions included development of OODB Method Code for the virtual file system and modifications to a public domain Internet News Reader (elm) so that it could access the system’s virtual file system.

Programming Languages & ToolsThe Cobol85 Compiler project comprised a commercial compiler and associated run-time libraries. The Cobol85 Test and Debug System (TADS) was a source level symbolic debugging tool used in conjunction with the Cobol85 Compiler. Both products employed Unisys’ “Slice compiler technology”.I represented Unisys on The ANSI X2.23 and ISO 1989-1985 Cobol standards committees. My contributions to the Cobol85 product included the design and implementation of its Input / Output statements and associated run-time library routines as well as its arithmetic expression evaluation code. I also designed its Inter-Process Communication code.I was the Principle Developer of the Cobol85 Test and Debug System (Cobol85TADS).
