I am an educator, scientist, and conservation biologist at heart, and I intertwine my three passions in my career. I transitioned from working as a research scientist (ornithology) to teaching; my goal is to teach science to middle- and high-school students as they sort out the next steps in their lives. I initially taught biology courses for non-majors at Corning Community College while pursuing my teaching certification from the New York State Education Department. I then taught middle-school Life Science and high school Forensic Science at Watkins Glen Central School District (NY, USA) before joining the faculty at the Alternative School for Math and Science in Corning, NY. I am currently teaching middle-school Physical Science, coach for our Rube Goldberg and Lego Robotics teams, and advise students as they develop and perform individual science projects. My primary focus is educating the next generation of scientists and citizens, though I still make time to study wildlife through various citizen science programs with my students. Birds remain my personal favorite, using birdwatching as a gateway to protect their habitat (and ours) through research and education.
Listed skills include Conservation Issues, Science, Ecology, Biology, and 26 others.

Watkins Glen, Ny
I taught Life Science to middle school students and Forensic Science to high school students.
Corning, Ny
I taught a variety of introductory biology courses, from those designed for non-majors with a focus on either animals and plants to those that focus on human biology or integrate anatomy, physiology, and chemistry.

I used acoustic technology to remotely monitor birds to track migration paths and phenology, assess importance of migratory stopover habitats, inventory hard-to-detect species, and explore animal communication. My team analyzed thousands of hours of nocturnal recordings to better understand the timing and magnitude of migrating songbirds across the United States, using the results to help inform decisions regarding placement of wind turbines. We also used remote sensors to monitor sensitive, nocturnal species such as the Spotted Owl and Whip-poor-will, enabling local biologists to better understand their distribution, abundance, habitat preferences, and calling activity.

I led the collection and analysis of acoustic recordings made from various locations across the southeastern U.S. that may hold the possibly-extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Based at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, NY, I worked with a team to deploy, collect, and process hundreds of thousands of hours of sounds recorded from bottomland hardwood forests in South Carolina, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, and Arkansas. I managed the development and implementation of eBird, a real-time, online checklist program that engages bird watchers of all kinds in collecting scientific data. eBird revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds, providing rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution around the world. You can explore this project here: http://ebird.org
During and following graduate work in biology I worked on a variety of biological research projects.
