Previously he served as a Board Director for the George Transplant Foundation and for Decatur Cooperative Ministry. Michael has earned NACD Directorship Certification from the National Association of Corporate Directors. He also holds a Certificate in Private Company Governance from the Private Directors Association.Michael was a Physician Executive at UnitedHealth Group where he was the Chief Medical Officer for the Care Innovation Lab. This R&D group used AI to successfully identify and risk-stratify members with clinical and service needs suitable for an innovative model of case management. Under his leadership, the Lab rapidly and effectively pivoted to support a COVID-19 clinical trial – a new venture for this enterprise.Previously at Optum, a UnitedHealth Group company, Michael was a Medical Director of National Accounts with customers including Lowe’s, UPS, and Walmart. Michael’s team received frequent accolades for excellent service while achieving cost reduction. Prior to United Health, Michael was the Founder & CEO of Medical Insights International, a consulting firm that became an industry leader in research and analysis in international medical travel. Michael began his career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. He designed and lead the Cardiac Surgery Program at Singing River Hospital, ranked among the best in Mississippi for several years according to HealthGrades®.Michael is a Diplomate, Fellow, or Member of numerous professional medical and surgical organizations. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He is also a Certified Physician Executive. Michael received a BS in Biology and an MD with specialty training in Surgery from the University of Miami. He did further specialty training in Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery at Ochsner Medical Foundation. Michael has an MBA from Emory University Goizueta Business School.
