Michael Keyhl founded OPTICOM in 1995 as a spin-off from Fraunhofer IIS and the first enterprise commercially developing and offering perceptual audio analysis tools. OPTICOM soon teamed up with John Beerends’ work on PSQM/ITU-T Recommendation P.861. Having been the sole point of PSQM licensing in the world since the definition of the standard in 1996, OPTICOM has been instrumental in the commercial introduction of PSQM and the technology of standardized perceptual measurement as such. Together with the distinguished team he gathered at OPTICOM, including his partner and CTO Chris Schmidmer, Michael co-authored, steered and managed development and standardization, along with the successful deployment of up to now eight International Standards for Voice, Audio and Video testing, including PEAQ, PESQ, P.563, PEVQ and now POLQA – the third generation of perceptual voice quality testing for telecommunications. Today, OPTICOM is the technology and market leader for perceptual Voice, Audio and Video quality testing. OPTICOM's core algorithms and standard's implementations are avialable for many platforms and operating systems and are being used by almost any Mobile phone manufacturer, Consumer and Professional Audio manufacturer, standard software vendor and Telecom operator in the world.

Erlangen

After his diploma thesis "Digital Audio Preamplifier", he joined the Audio group of the Fraunhofer-Institute in Erlangen, better known as the ‚Home of MP3’. Michael was part of the MP3 development team and a project manager of the very first Audio-on-Demand music delivery system in the early nineties. In the course of his work with Fraunhofer, his passion for high-quality sound drove his engagement in further advancing perceptual measurement systems, including the Noise-to-Mask ratio real-time tester, the world’s premiere perceptual quality analysis tool for compressed audio. Under his project leadership, perceptual measurment tools were introduced by early-adopters like R&D labs, manufacturers of DAB equipment, broadcasters and telecom operators. During his work at Fraunhofer, he gained skills not only related to DSP programming, audio research and acoustics, but also in International project management, working with a Broadway music enterprise, broadcasters, professional audio manufacturers and steering a publicly funded European Research project. Further skills include software marketing, licensing, International standardization and test consulting services for labs and magazines. This work laid the ground for founding OPTICOM in 1995, the first spin-off enterprise commercially developing and offering perceptual audio analysis tools.
