Michael Lugmayr is the co-founder of Design by Toko and was elected a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale in 2016.After graduating cum-laude and gaining valuable insights at some of the worlds leading creative agencies in The Netherlands and the United States, Michael co-founded ‘Design by Toko’ in partnership with Eva Dijkstra in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in 2001.Lead by curiosity and eagerness to discover new places both relocated to Australia in 2006 with the courageous intention to establish the agency in beautiful Sydney. Nine months after opening it’s Sydney doors Design by Toko was awarded the coveted Hotshot agency of the year award by Creative Magazine.Michael’s cross continental insights and unique approach enabled him to quickly gain (inter)national recognition for design excellence and innovations in the field of branding and design overall.His work encompasses brand identities, wayfinding systems, installations and exhibition design, editorial and campaign design for clients such as the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the White Rabbit Gallery, City of Sydney, FutureCity London, Capital Museum of China, Australian Institute of Architects, Powerhouse Museum, Architecture Institute Rotterdam and The Danish Agency for Culture. Throughout his career Michael has worked on and for major international brands including the Royal Dutch Post, Midas Inc, Virgin Mobile, Sydney Opera House, MINI, Danish Post, MTV, Orange, Virgin Atlantic, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and more. Michael’s work has been published in numerous design books and magazines theworld over and he actively engages in the creative community, regularly lecturing at universities and design conferences. He established Gallery by Toko presenting art and design exhibitions, book launches and industry talks all sharing a clear curatorial vision dominated by his urge to explore the parallels and boundaries between art and design.He advocates authenticity and vigorously pursuits his life moto ‘live a little’.
