Sep 2012 - Dec 2012

Industrial Design Intern - Wheels Division

Greater Los Angeles Area

My time at Spin Master gave me great insight into the toy industry, but more importantly, even further expanded my real-world knowledge of production capabilities and development. Much like my second internship at Frontgate, I communicated heavily with oversea vendors to make sure the toys which I was designing could be produced. In addition, I dealt heavily with licensing while at Spin Master; so I not only had to make the vendors who would be producing my designs happy, but the representatives from the brands which we were licensing from as well. In addition to the wealth of experience and knowledge I gained from this internship, more projects from this internship will undoubtedly see production than in any of my previous internships.

Mar 2012 - Jun 2012

Design Intern

Cincinnati, Oh

Bruce D. Robinson is not a job which one might expect an Industrial Designer to hold. Many facets of the job appear to speak to the skillset of an architect or interior designer, but as founder of the company, Bruce sees to it that most of the interns he hires are from the Industrial Design program at the University of Cincinnati. Through his experiences with past interns, he must have seen that the Industrial Design program at UC prepares its students to be effective workers in all facets of design; even unfamiliar ones. Through my time at Bruce D. Robinson, I was able to learn many traits from the entertainment design field, as well as expand on my existing skillset. I also had the fortune to explore character design a bit with one project in particular (the Margaritaville characters which can be found toward the bottom of my college portfolio page at https://michaelmatteodesign.com/#/college/). Overall, the experience taught me a great deal about the diversity of design positions which I could possibly hold upon graduating...and I had a blast the whole time!

Sep 2011 - Dec 2011

Product Design Intern

West Chester, Oh

I interned at Frontgate twice, once during my Fall Quarter of 2010, and again during my Spring Quarter of 2011. Both were great experiences for different reasons. My first internship there, it felt as though I was coming up with dozens of new products every week; and many of them were approved for production. My next time around, many of those products which I had thought were completely production-ready needed further communication with oversea vendors to be manufactured. With one project in particular (the Marlin Martini Shaker showcased in my college portfolio page at https://michaelmatteodesign.com/#/college/) I even had to go as far as modeling a tool-ready, functional CAD model, having it SLA (3D) Printed, and shipping it over to India so that they could make direct castings from the SLA prototype. Throughout the process, I maintained direct contact with the oversea vendors to make sure they would have everything they would need to bring this item to production. While my second internship at Frontgate may not have yielded quite the plethora and variety of original designs as my first one, I definitely learned a great deal about what it can take to see to it that difficult-to-produce items see production.

Sep 2010 - Jun 2011

Product Design Intern

Stoughton, Ma

During this three month period, while it was my first internship, I was given many of the same responsibilities as the designers employed by the First Years. In addition to working with the design team to ideate, develop, and refine concepts for production, I worked under Patrick Thrailkill and gained invaluable knowledge on the corporate world of designing; drastically increasing my ability to communicate ideas quickly and effectively through sketching along the way.
