News Director At Kmsu
In the beginning, this was the most terrifying job of my life. I started as a basic News Reporter my second year of college. Each week I had to cover between one and five news stories on campus. I started as a basic News Reporter my second year of college. Each week I had to cover between one and five news stories on campus. A simple news story involved an interview from a person involved in the topic and some explanatory information to round out what would be a 75 second broadcast. For example, my first story was on construction around the university. I needed to interview the building manager but I just couldn't make the phone call. Talking to strangers made my mind shut down for some reason, but I took this position so I could master that fear. Eventually, I e-mailed him, set up a time, and made sure to write down 15 questions to ask so I wouldn't blank. Once I had my interview, I had to take to the studio and edit together with some context information until it sounded like something the Associated Press would publish. That's how I became a reporter.Being the News Director was a whole different animal. I expressed interest in the position May 2014 and due to the quality and timeliness of my work (never missed a deadline), I was promoted to the position. As the News Director I had to do everything I did as a Reporter, but now with more responsibilities. I was in charge of running the weekly meetings where I would assign my team of about ten reporters their stories. After that, I would come into the studio each evening and compile the stories due that day into one fluid piece to be broadcasted for the news breaks the next day. Best case scenario, that is all I would need to do. Of course, that was rarely the case. As a manager, you learn the strength and weaknesses of your reporters and you create situations to play up those strengths. Reliable Reporters' stories were paired with the less reliable in order to guarantee there would be news the next day. I would schedule one-on-one training meetings to make sure everyone was improving. KMSU taught me the most about being a manager. Show less
