Prior to moving into teaching, I worked as a programmer, analyst and then project manager for various blue chip companies between 1985 and 2001. However, it was in teaching I found my most challenging and rewarding vocation. I was amazed at the amount of paperwork lecturers in further education had to generate to satisfy the needs of exam boards and the duplication of effort this required. This started my mission to simplify the process. I switched from a full-time to part-time lecturer and since 2009 have dedicated my time out of college to the creation of eSubs, a system that manages the complete assessment process. The more time I spent on it, the more passionate I became about simplifying the workflow and avoiding duplication of effort. Lecturers need all the time they can get to prepare high quality lessons and the last thing they need is to be swamped by paperwork. Following fantastic feedback from users at the two colleges using the system, I left my teaching job at the end of the 2015/16 academic year to concentrate on eSubs full-time. eSubs is now running in the cloud from Microsoft's Azure servers in the UK and eSubs now provides: Online submission by learners; Integrated online marking (with Google or Microsoft applications); Internal and external quality assurance; Overall qualifcation grading and target setting; Integration with VLE and MIS systems.
