Engineering Manager, Messaging
CurrentHaving started at Spotify as the Manager of a single squad of 7 Engineers, my influence has grown to now manage three highly efficient, delivery-focused squads in the Messaging Platform—18 Engineers, comprising the majority of the Product Area. The teams are responsible for functionality across multiple backend core capabilities as well as user-focused mobile client orchestration and delivery. We are building and maintaining extremely high-scale and high-accuracy systems with very low latency throughput.* Initiated and led a Product Area domain modeling project which has become the basis of a platform effort to clarify both team topology and architectural alignment with the business model.* Assessed a squad with widely disparate domain knowledge and experience, and then devised and implemented a custom, delivery-focused Agile workflow based on dual-track Agile, mob programming, priority focus, and reduced story size, thereby dramatically increasing both delivery and predictability.* Deployed an “Enablement Pod” of Senior and Staff Engineers to improve platform adoption for internal users and other technical teams (via APIs).* Initiated multiple successful practices for gaining whole-platform process alignment like holding regular cross-squad support retrospectives, and introducing a quarterly team health assessment.
