During this time I also appeared as counsel at defended hearings in the Magistrates Court and at sentencing hearings in the District Court.I was the instructing solicitor in a complex and major people-smuggling prosecution, which involved studying a voluminous brief of evidence containing complex issues of identification and parties to the offences. This case involved travelling throughout Australia interviewing witnesses in preparation for the trial.I had sole conduct of defended hearings arising from riots and disturbances at Immigration Detention Centres at Curtin, Port Hedland and Christmas Island. The offences I prosecuted included causing harm to Commonwealth public officials, hindering public officials and damaging Commonwealth property. These briefs in particular involved complex identification issues. I drafted many applications for telephone intercept warrants, listening device warrants, search and seizure warrants including urgent applications after hours to judicial officers on behalf of the Australian Federal Police.From my time working at the CDPP I developed a working knowledge of the federal sentencing regime and the complex physical and fault elements created by the Commonwealth Criminal Code and a thorough working knowledge of the Prosecution Policy of the Commonwealth.
