Profile bio

About Michael Scotton

The world needs a better balance between the environment, society and economic activity. In a career spanning 20+ years working globally in energy supply and climate change I have seen an evolution in the complexity of energy supply solutions and an increasing recognition of the importance of environmental impacts and societal expectations. Climate change has been an important issue in that evolution, and it connects as both a risk and opportunity to many of the dimensions of sustainability.I enjoy working with people and organisations to educate and support them to understand their climate change and sustainability risks and opportunities. And I help them to design climate transition pathways that will make them, their clients and customers, and the communities in which they operate more resilient to the physical and transition risks of climate change.I bring my experience with global mining company Rio Tinto where I advised on the 2025 and 2030 emission reduction targets, led processes to understand decarbonisation pathways to achieving net-zero goals by 2050, and established processes and tools to integrate carbon planning into the strategic and annual planning processes. I also led the implementation of a program to better understand the risks of physical climate change on Rio Tinto's assets, value chain and communities. In my role with Grant Thornton I look forward to working with current and future clients on their transition planning, and navigating their obligations under the new mandatory climate reporting standards ASRS 1 and ASRS 2.

Listed skills include Energy, Strategy, Gas, Management, and 3 others.
