I am the responsible lawyer for Reworld’s WtE plants in the Western US for which I advise on project agreements and draft, review and negotiate amendments to those agreements, including operations and maintenance and waste disposal agreements. My WtE project work also involves reviewing and negotiating plant procurement agreements and managing legal claims with municipal clients, utilities and vendors. I also support our environmental services business and have played a significant role in its growth. I act as internal legal lead for the acquisition and integration of environmental services businesses and negotiate master services agreements with large national corporate clients, subcontracts for federal waste tenders, waste disposal agreements for healthcare industry waste and alternative engineered fuel supply agreements for cement kilns. In addition, I have primary responsibility for the legal matters and commercial contracts of Reworld’s metals recovery and ash processing business and am working with that group to implement a new ash processing facility at our H-Power WtE plant in Hawaii and to secure intellectual property rights for its new technology. My significant achievements since joining Reworld (formerly Covanta at the time) in the US include completing the sale of Reworld’s China business and contributing to environmental services growth by facilitating the completion of the acquisition of 7 environmental services companies in 2022 as internal legal lead and negotiating and finalizing multiple high-value master services agreements with large national corporate clients as well as a high value federal government subcontract. I managed internal and external counsel in the handling of Chinese and regional legal matters, oversaw United States and local legal and regulatory compliance matters, and reported to and coordinated with New Jersey-based senior corporate counsel and management regarding Asian legal matters. I further represented the company at government functions such as trade missions and at industry conferences and served as a director of the Shanghai company and on the boards of many of Covanta’s other regional affiliates. While my work has focused primarily on the acquisition and development of waste-to-energy or energy-from-waste (EfW) projects in China my experience included acquisition and development work on multiple EfW projects in several countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia and Mauritius, and I also handled a number of major business and asset sales. Significant achievements included contributing to the growth of the China EfW business by closing agreements for 3 EfW projects, with the most recent one having been the Zhao County EfW project in Q4 2019, and as Asian legal lead, handling the sale of equity interests in 5 independent power projects and a swap of equity in Covanta’s main joint venture and 2 other EfW projects in China, netting several hundred million dollars in proceeds.
