A purpose-driven life.My 35-year professional goal has been to build capacity to effect sweeping change to advance climate and energy solutions for Minnesota and beyond. I organize private industry, civil society constituencies and philanthropy to drive investment at the pace and scale required by the climate crisis.Personal vision.Increasingly, all serious and well-informed people agree that a net carbon-neutral economy is necessary by mid-century, with the electric power sector decarbonizing fastest and leading the way. The self-evident decarbonization pathways are a carbon-free electric supply, and electrifying everything we can. Other industrial and systems solutions beyond electrification will also be necessary. Systemic decarbonization must be done in ways that reduce economic dislocation and racial disparities, rather than exacerbate them. Communities most affected by climate change, communities with the least capacity to mitigate or adapt, and communities disadvantaged by the rapid transformation must be central to the solutions, and at the decision-making tables.While I approach energy with a climate protection and equity lens, anyone who engages energy issues from the view of global security, economic vitality or U.S. competitiveness will also conclude that a thorough-going energy technology revolution is needed, and past due.Bias for action.Since 1990, I have helped to shape and drive many dozens of major and minor policy innovations toward this effort (list available upon request.) Partnering with industries, policy-makers, non-governmental organizations and philanthropy to achieve big things has been my central role.Core skills.My core competencies are business administration and governance, mentoring management and key leaders, philanthropic advisory, coalescing of influence. I grow talent that builds partnerships across widely divergent institutions and businesses, NGOs, government agencies and elected officials. To support this, I depend on analysis that is transparent and driven by evidence, and communications and messaging that connects to people's values and builds public resolve.New venture.After "rewiring" my life and stepping down from an NGO leadership role in spring 2023, I have formed NobleIdeas LLC to provide impartial advice and engagement with governments, industries and philanthropies on their own strategies to reduce U.S. dependence on coal, oil, and gas and expand the clean energy economy through implementation of public policy, investment, and deployment of known climate solutions.
