Michele is a computational material scientist with expertise in simulating nuclear and semiconductor materials with density functional theory and molecular dynamics methods. Her background is in materials science, physics, mathematics, coding, and data analysis. She is currently an Australian Science Policy Fellow.Michele was employed as a postdoctoral research assistant at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) from January 2021 to January 2023. While at PNNL, she investigated the influence of free surfaces on cascade dynamics resulting from neutron irradiation in near-surface pure nickel in comparison to bulk using molecular dynamics simulations. This included characterizing defect production, cluster morphology and distribution as a function of temperature, primary-knock-on atom energy and depth. She developed scripts to batch schedule high throughput cascade simulations, analyze data and batch process the analysis.Michele graduated from the Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering at the University of Florida in 2020, where she completed her PhD under Professor Simon R. Phillpot. Her dissertation is entitled "Thermodynamics and Charged Defects in Nuclear Alloys and Semiconductor Materials from First-Principles Calculations". Before moving to the US for graduate school, she taught English in Japan for six years before being selected to participate in the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization’s (ANSTO) Graduate Development program, where she was introduced to computational materials science. During her graduate studies, Michele researched thin film growth for electrical devices, charged defects in doped semiconductor materials, thermodynamics of nuclear fuel cladding, and interatomic potential development with a variety of different computational techniques. As part of her research on nuclear fuel cladding, she completed an eight-month internship at Idaho National Laboratory. She is experienced in first-principles computational techniques, kinetic Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics, cluster expansion, and phonon calculations, and she has a strong interest in multiscale modelling and machine learning.
