Everyone talks about the different hats they wear. Since I can’t tell my story using my “Life is Good” baseball cap and my hardhat; I’ll talk about the shoes I fill instead. My shoe selection any given work week is as dynamic as my 28 year career in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). I slip in and out of loafers, work boots, steel-toed boots, high heels, flats, fitness shoes and flip flops as the situation demands. As President of Aria Environmental I get to build lasting, fruitful relationships with project owners, regulators, architects, engineers, geologists, other environmental consultants, construction managers, laboratories and specialty trades on Brownfield redevelopment or building renovation or decommissioning projects. So much of this work starts with the formal networking sessions, the C-suite planning sessions, the proposal preparation, the interview, and ultimately the win. This stage is characterized by the achy feet in high heels. It’s worth it because that leads to where my work shoes and steel-toed boots hit the ground. I love putting plans into action. I excel in the field when I am participating in Phase II environmental site assessments, hazardous materials surveys, laboratory decommissioning projects, industrial hygiene/ safety audits, subsurface investigations, soil-vapor intrusion studies/risk assessments, well installations and Phase III remediation projects. I understand the dynamics of team work and the challenge of balancing stakeholder demands. Projects like the Maryland I-95 Travel Plazas Redevelopment, the Phase I and II FDA/NIH Laboratory Decommissioning Studies, the Bernie Fowler Laboratory Energy Upgrades project, and the Naval Research Laboratory Building 65/75 projects illustrate my strengths as a project team member and scientist.
