How things change - from Famer to Diver…‘Yorkshire born, Yorkshire bred, strong in the arm and thick in the head’. Youngster living on a farm in West Yorkshire, with two older brothers (what could go wrong)Life was two halves, 1. boring bit of going to school. 2. Out and about where the real learning could commence – who knew that using an old tractor exhaust on your shoulder, sliding in a lighted fireworks rocket was a great rocket launcher. The surrounding households do, as do I when egged on by brothers (what could go wrong) inserting three at once only to find they jammed together starting a sequence of fire balls about two feet from my head. Arriving to take my exams, and parking the tractor and plough in the staff car park causing a few giggles when during the exam it was announced ‘’’will the person who has parked the tractor blocking the staff car park please move it’ . Did this have a detrimental effect on my result?Farming for me, even attending College, and achieving the giddy heights of HND – Then the wheels fell of the cart and into the world I had to go, with my HND in hand.Tree planter, Steel erector, car salesman, truck driver, – stuff it I’m off to Australia after seeing a small advert in the Farmers Weekly Magazine. I landed in Perth WA, no boots as they were confiscated at the airport because they had MUD on them.A few weeks in Perth to acclimatise, try the ‘amber nectar’ and then off to a farm & quarry in the outback – ‘hope you get on OK Coober as its 6 hours to dive back and we won’t be coming back for months’ was the singlet wearing guys comments as he collected me. I stayed for months – driving the biggest tractors I’d ever seen in fields as big as a small country, herding thousands of sheep with a motorbike plus three funny looking dogs. Driving a road train that long you couldn’t see the back. The best advice was on the first day – if you get bitten by a snake Kill it. ‘I bloody will’ I said all warrior like – ‘no kill it and bring it back so I know what to inject you with’ - gulp!!! Eventually I heard tell of the Barrier Reef, buying a clapped-out Holden (Vauxhall) estate my plan was to drive up one coast, over the top, and down the other side. (What could go wrong), well for one it’s a bloody long way, arriving in Cairns without a car. ‘What do you mean it’s all underwater’ I said when inquiring how to see this wonder of the world. Signing up to the cheapest diving school my underwater life started, breathing underwater, this must be magic or something. This is a bit of my story, what’s yours...?

Tree PlanterTrees/Landscaping Company Feb 1999 - Jul 1999Pontefract, England, United KingdomAfter completing my HSE diving course i started work with a friends company as a stop gap until i had a position secured in the diving /marine industry. Farm OperativeFarm Feb 1998 - Aug 1998Wetsen AustraliaAs with previous Western Australia work this was on a large Farm with quarry attached, with the main objective of seeding an area of 8000 acres in the time allocated. This was easily achieved with minimal disruption between only three personnel. After this was completed, I was offered an opportunity of driving large road train trucks and working with other aspects of the farm, with the offer of longer working if required. I left this farm to travel and see the Barrier Reef travelling further down the East Coast of Australia.

Car SalespersonPerrys Dec 1996 - Dec 1997Bradford, England, United KingdomLooking for something different, I joined Perry’s Bradford as a salesperson for used cars. Now I could see the value of targets and self-motivation. The industry was set up on a heavily commission basis, so the more cars sold the more you made and the better company car you were allowed to drive. It took six months before I regularly became the highest monthly salesperson with over 20 units per month. The position allowed me to take internal/external training courses learning further th value of understanding the real need, as well as the aspiration of clients. ‘what good is a two seater sports car when you have a wife, two kids and dog?’ I developed the value of technical/production knowledge and the benefits this gave customers, give air of ease to the process. When the garage was bought by competitor, I decided to return back to Australia gaining a sponsorship with references from my previous employer.

Truck DriverFrelance Worker Nov 1994 - Nov 1996Barnsley, England, United KingdomIn conjunction with my oldest brother we started a haulage business, two SCANIA trucks working in general haulage bulk haulage. This progressed into a fleet of 6 trucks and employees working over the length and breadth of Britain. The skills developed over the previous employments stood me in good stead, both people and machinery. There was always repairs/servicing to be completed and drivers to organise, destination to coordinate with pickups and shortest routes to keep productive up time to the maximum. It was at this point I was introduced to invoicing, financial, accounting etc, gaining knowledge in how to run a business. The main business grew around the coal industry which declined greatly, so a decision was made move onto things new -
Farm OperativeTbc Feb 1994 - Oct 1994Perth, Western Australia, AustraliaLooking to see some of the world I went to Australia and took a job on a farm in Western Australia- As much as the job as steel erector developed people management, this was back to working alone. The development came on a more mechanical and organization front. Using wits and knowledge to ensure machinery remained in a servable condition coupled with the remoteness and lead time of items arriving organisational activities came into play. I climbed to the position of charge hand, overseeing the use of the machinery fleet on a 10,000 area farm to ensure the maximum area was cultivated and planted/seeded in the time I worked there. The time I worked there then over 9000 acres were seeded between the rains which was the highest area the farm had planted. Once this had been completed, I decided to see the sites of Australia and then head back to the UK to start something for myself

Steel ErectorTbc Mar 1993 - Dec 1993Pontefract, England, United KingdomSteel erecting seemed to attract me for the the reasons of hands on work, outside and rough enough that the skills I had gained so far were of a benefit. Even though I worked with the steel erecting gang for a short period it was a great learning experience, not so much in work, even though following drawings can be a skill. It was more in people management/earning the ‘ways’ it has to be. Most of the teams were from dubious backgrounds, most with a mentality of sorting a problem with a dust up. Unless you could carry a 50 kg cylinder up 7 flights of stairs then this probably wasn’t the best way. It taught me to manage people in different ways and asses a situation accordingly. Remember after coming from a farm where mostly it was lone working into this was a very good lesson. In this occupation the work force seem to move as teams, the next assignment was abroad, at this time I wanted try different things.

FarmerJ Bower & Sons Feb 1984 - Mar 1993Pontefract, England, United KingdomWorked on the family farm from a young age. It was a good place to start using my own initiative, learning how to make things work better, adapt, dodge the bad bits and still make a difference. i seemed a natural path to continue in the family tradition and continue with the Farm. Due a massive change in circumstances the farm option was lost and I had to move on
