"Performance improvement of a software/hardware implementation of the Smith-Waterman algorithm on Zynq-7000 devices" - Research works on embedded systems for my Master's final project, carried out at the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of Politecnico di Milano.I implemented and documented an embedded system on a Xilinx Zynq-7000 SoC (featuring FPGA + ARM microcontroller connected with AXI4 protocol) that executed the Smith-Waterman algorithm (used for sequence alignment). The goal was to compare and report performance results between a C-code version of the algorithm, and a VHDL implementation where operations were parallelized. I analyzed both architectures to define their time consumption, identify bottlenecks, and advise further enhancements.
