About Mika Armenta
With theory and research grounded in experimental social psychology, and eight-years’ experience in government and national security research settings, my goal is to identify effective solutions to prevent, mitigate, and reconcile violence and social conflict through the design, monitoring, and evaluation of development and humanitarian interventions. Specifically, I look to DM&E in fragile contexts involving peacebuilding and social conflict – spanning prevention to reconciliation.Through experience in social science research in both academia and government research, I have skills in research and analytics, interactive and personal capacities, management and leadership, and communication. I have worked in fast-paced environments both independently and as an adaptable, collaborative team member, having led interdisciplinary teams involving psychologists, political scientists, computer scientists, and systems analysis experts to develop new programs, inform basic research and produce applications for national security contexts. I have developed inventive approaches to measure social cohesion at the individual level in children and adults from multiple cultural groups, and have experience managing and evaluating data and communicating complex content to a wide variety of stakeholders ranging from non-expert audiences. I write at multiple levels ranging from general-readership and abstracts to technical reports in national security contexts, and have experience speaking at academic conferences and national laboratories before government representatives.Competencies: quantitative and qualitative data analysis, guided-interviews, survey administration, grant/proposal writing, science-policy communication, R, basic Python, SPSS, Microsoft Office (including Excel), e-Prime (psychology task software), Qualtrics (online survey platform), Amazon Mechanical Turk (online study platform)

Research Consultant
I co-developed and lead participant-informed research on social cohesion and climate change in Basrah, Iraq. Specifically, in a between-groups design, we evaluated the impacts of a subprogram from Mercy Corps Iraq's, "Advocacy Creates Transformational Influence Validating Action for the Environment (ACTIVATE)" on aspects of social cohesion in a neighborhood in Basrah, Iraq. Many in this neighborhood are Sabean, a religious minority in Iraq, who experience some religious discrimination as a minority group. Many in the neighborhood are also concerned with climate change induced water scarcity. We found that, relative to a control group, those who participated in the ACTIVATE-inspired intervention felt more cohesive with other social groups than those who did not participate in it. We believe that this may be due to the nature of the intervention in that it caused people to think about climate-related hardships that affect everyone and not just their social group.
