About Mike Cave
Since 2006, I have been working as a Unix/Linux Systems Administrator. As the Technology Administrator for Co-operative Education and Career Services I gained experience in a production 24/7 Linux environment. I was the sole administrator for a set of systems and services crucial to the department. I spent significant time on systems automation and infrastructure development. Also in this role, I gained in-depth knowledge of web application technologies and database design. In 2010 I started with the Unix Services Team where I began working in a truly enterprise environment. This environment includes both the support of core business services for the university and research computing resources in the form of multiple computing clusters. During my six years with this team I developed a strong skill set revolving around systems automation, Linux user management, and systems monitoring. In April of 2017, I transitioned from the Data Centre Services team to the Research Computing Services team. We support an Open Stack cloud infrastructure, as well as geo-replicated storage cluster and high performance computing systems (HPC). This new role supports researchers at the University of Victoria, across Canada, and Internationally through a wide variety of consortiums and partnerships.I have also served as a project manager, where I utilized strong communication strategies to coordinate multiple resources and conflicting timelines across departments inside our organization. I have effectively managed resources to provide solutions to unexpected issues in the course of the project timeline. This experience has been invaluable for developing the skills to deliver a quality solution which meets the expectations of clients and stakeholders.
