Group Chief
I lived with boys with issues outdoors 24 hours a day, 5 days a week, serving as a teacher, guardian, counselor, pastor, nurse, security, job coach, friend, and so much more. We built our own structures outside to live in, cooked over open fires, planned canoeing river trips and backpacking trips, and we worked on building relationships in learning what it means to live for more than just yourself. This was a highly structured program that is goal based that we help the boys set and achieve.
Volunteer Coordinator
I arrived to the disaster zone a couple of days after Hurricane Sandy hit. I helped bring relief to the survivors of Hurricane Sandy and organized volunteers to do the same.I was first put to work delivering hot meals and supplies into the high rise public housing buildings. Many people were without power for weeks and weeks and were stuck in their homes because elevators were out and they are not able to walk up and down stairs. I was then put into the Calvary Baptist Church kitchen to help with preparing and serving the hot meals to those that could get out of their homes but couldn’t cook at home because of the storm. I had let some people know that first day in Red Hook that we were going to be here awhile helping out and so they asked if I could organize and manage the kitchen the next day. I said I could and they gave me a little crash course on what to do. The next three weeks I was helping out in the kitchen almost everyday from 9:30am until 9pm or later. I was helping manage the food intake and outtake and managing the volunteers that came into help serve. After the kitchen hot food distribution was no longer a need for Red Hook, I found another place to use my gifts in the cleaning out of homes and visiting people that need help. This led into more of helping organize the homes and businesses relief projects and connecting the volunteers to those jobs. I also have been spending time recruiting more volunteers to help, helping with the distribution center in Red Hook, participating in the collaboration meetings between the many organizations helping with relief work, using my car to transport people and supplies, building many great relationships with the youth and adults in Red Hook, and helping maintain good working relationships between the many involved. A few of us started this 501(c)3 so that we could take in donations so that we could continue the work and buy supplies for the people that needed to clean out and rebuild.
