To this point in my career, I have been fortunate enough to work as an opera stage manager. I believe that every field has a need for employees with the skills of a stage manager: someone to manage the logistics of people, time, and spaces with diligence. This should be done while maintain professionalism and respect towards individuals of all diversities and backgrounds. With years of experience, I have risen to become an in-demand stage manager for many of America’s premier opera companies and I have acquired a stellar reputation as a talented and enjoyable colleague. I have also been able to hone the specific skills of time management, detail orientation, and calm and steady leadership. As I stage manager I am the hub of communication for up to 300 individuals working on a production. At all times, I have been able to maintain a calm demeanor regardless of the pressure created by short timelines and strong personalities. I have learned how to keep large groups of people focused and task-oriented to help propel a project forward. This leadership takes place in person, through emails, and through written memos.Another important ability I’ve obtained is the ability to track details. I have become adept at organizing deadlines for goals that are a day, a week, or a month away. This includes the insight of how to prioritize requests from multiple sources, and the flexibility to anticipate how goals shift overtime. Perhaps the skill I have become most adept at is time management and scheduling. Every day I was able to create a schedule for the next day. These schedules needed to take into account the overarching goal of a project while incorporating obstacles such as requests from numerous departments, budget constraints from unions, and venue availabilities. In addition, I also have been tasked with creating long-term project calendars. These schedules and calendars are distributed company wide to hundreds of individuals.
