Mike trained as a QS in the early 70’s, joined Longdin & Browning as a land surveyor in 1974 with contracts in Nigeria and Kuwait. He worked in Scotland at the beginning of the North Sea Oil & Gas exploration. Mike's skill set evolved from traditional survey to engineering survey (Dimensional Control). Developing skills in programming and coming up with ideas like the survey spike that could be used with the first coaxial Total Stations, changing the way measurements could be captured. Visiting Japan as an inspector for a number of large projects on behalf of Highland Fabricators.In 1983 travelled with his family to South Korea as a consultant to Hyundai Heavy Industries in the Ulsan Shipyard, the main project was for Exxon - Harmony & Heritage Jackets, and at the time the deepest fixed offshore structures in the world. Challenging work as the curvature of the earth over the length of the structure (1250ft) was greater than the straightness tolerance.Back in Scotland in 1989 joined Thistle Engineering in Aberdeen as Technical Director. The main focus was offshore survey to enable pipework to fit without field fit welding. Mike developed the merCAD software, an application to measure pipework accurately. Started Mike Lloyd Technical Services Ltd in 1998 to take advantage of advances in hardware and software, many exciting changes at that time. Utilising technology to reduce the number of personnel involved in survey capture and developed visual program solutions for industrial measurement that is now called the automet® system.Today he continues this development in on-site survey solutions and pipework manufacture control.
