Lakehead University Community Legal Services is a Student Legal Service Organization funded by Legal Aid Ontario and staffed by lawyers who supervise students acting for community members who qualify for legal assistance. As Review Counsel, I'm primarily supervising students in the area of housing law, mostly matters before the Landlord and Tenant Board. I'm part coach and part advocate. As an advocate, I really enjoy being able to think deeply about files and not have to worry about how legal fees impact a client's potential access to justice. As a coach, I get to see a law student develop the confidence and understanding that comes with their first steps into the profession, from marking up their letters, to watching them conduct their first cross examinations. My goal is to develop thoughtful, ethical, professionals who thrive in practice because they were equipped with the skills to enable them to enter the profession with a running start.
