Supervising 3 subject specialist teams of lawyers responsible for devising and delivering the assessments in Criminal Litigation, Civil Litigation, and Professional Ethics that all barristers seeking qualification to practice at the Bar of England and Wales must pass – currently around 2,200 candidates world-wide every year. The role involves chairing all key team and examinations meetings, drafting the detailed Chair’s reports on the conduct of each diet of assessments (available from the Bar Standards Board website), appointing subject team examiners, and liaising with key stakeholders such as HEI’s offering the Bar Training Course, the Inns of Court, the Bar Council and other regulators.

An Emeritus Professor of Legal Education, and now a Visiting Professor in the Business School at London South Bank University, Mike has over 30 years’ experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of Public Law and Criminal Law across a range of institutions, including the LSE and the Open University. Mike has extensive management and leadership experience, having been Head of the Law Department at London South Bank University for 10 years, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at London South Bank University for 7 years, and most recently Pro-Vice Chancellor (Enhancement) and Dean of the School of Business at London South Bank University until his retirement in 2018. Mike’s extensive external profile has included serving as Chair the Council of University Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH-UK), a trustee of the educational charity Protimos, and Chair of the Governing Board of the National Association of Licensed Paralegals (NALP). Mike’s current activities include Chairing the Central Examinations Board for the Bar Standards Board (‘BSB’) and acting as a senior adviser to the Director-General of the BSB on the implementation of the BSB’s Future Bar Training programme. Mike has delivered sessions for the Chartered Association of Business School for Deans, and for those transferring into leadership roles in business schools from the commercial world. Mike has extensive experience of coaching and mentoring staff at all levels to help drive programmes of cultural change and improve individual effectiveness and performance.
