About Mike Poland

As an established software engineering professional with twenty-plus years under my belt, I am equally as comfortable with an IDE on my screen as I am a spreadsheet. My career as a manager and individual contributor has spanned the telecommunications and IP networking, fintech, and mobile application development spaces. During my time as an Android developer, I had the pleasure of working on some pretty high profile applications. Between ESPN, Starbucks, The New York Times, and several projects for Fox, if you were an Android user in the 2010’s there’s a really good chance you’ve experienced my work first-hand. It also provided something more tangible to show my parents to explain “this is what I actually do for a living.”I genuinely enjoy working to support, unblock, and bolster engineering teams in a leadership capacity. Essentially, I’m always thinking “What did I want and need to make my life as a developer easier?” Being able to provide that service to a team, and allow engineers to focus as much as they can on the task at hand, makes me feel like I have made a difference at the end of a day. I do still enjoy coding and have a few personal projects that keep me engaged.Outside of work, you’ll often find me spending time with my family at the beach (hence the banner image). I Attempt to play as many board and tabletop games as I can find groups for. Music - both listening and playing - is a pretty big part of how I like to relax. And if there’s ever a situation where dogs are involved, I’m jumping right in to dish out pets and belly rubs!

Mike Poland Work Experience Details
  • Cloudflare
    System Engineer
    Cloudflare Mar 2024 - Present
    San Francisco, California, United States
Back to zero'ing and one'ing! I can't believe how much I missed being able to regularly dig in deep on technical problems. Currently working on Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 + WARP and Zero Trust applications. Mostly Android at the moment ... but, starting to get my hands dirty on other platforms, getting acclimated to Rust, and trying out anything new I can find.
  • Jack Henry
    Senior Software Engineering Manager
    Jack Henry Sep 2019 - Aug 2023
    Monett, Missouri, United States
Taking over a team was an interesting proposition. Prior to my arrival, the Android team was led by two very senior engineers that had been involved with the product close to its inception. They both realized that their skills (and job preference) were better served by focusing on direct technical contributions to the code base. During my time here, I had the privilege of working with some of the best engineers I have ever encountered.• Led a hybrid group of 15 engineers consisting of an employee/contractor mix and spanning the United States and Spain. • Managed the development, release, and ongoing support lifecycle of a white-label mobile banking Android application serving 600+ community financial institutions.• Maintained a team roadmap of six concurrent project tracks. Prioritized revenue generating and time-sensitive projects while continuously having at least one track available for internal efforts surrounding tech debt burndown, performance, and code modernization.
  • Hypergiant
    Solutions Architect
    Hypergiant Dec 2018 - Aug 2019
    Austin, Texas, United States
It’s difficult to describe my role during this period … part management, part architecture, part client services. The biggest challenge for me was guiding the Black Pixel team through an acquisition period with tons of uncertainty and unknowns. Once things stabilized, I did have the pleasure of doing some work for Bechtel - a company that my late uncle spent the majority of his career with.• Led transition efforts of former Black Pixel engineering staff and clientele into the Hypergiant ecosystem.• Designed and documented overall architecture, timelines, and budget for the Bechtel project. Presented the solution to executive stakeholders and secured funding for the development phase of the project.
  • Black Pixel
    Director, Engineering
    Black Pixel Jun 2018 - Dec 2018
    Seattle, Washington, United States
This position was unexpected. After some management departures, including my boss at the time, I took over engineering leadership for the entire development arm of the company. Beyond the rote interaction with engineers, I found myself much more involved in sales calls and proposals in an effort to secure work and contracts for the company. Here marks the first time I truly saw “how the sausage is made.”• Took over overarching management responsible for 25+ Android, iOS, Web, and Test engineers.• Authored, presented, and won a contract proposal for the ground-up rebuild of the internal work management platform for the Bechtel Corporation.
  • Black Pixel
    Manager, Android Engineering
    Black Pixel Oct 2017 - Jun 2018
    Seattle, Washington, United States
This marks my first formal stint in a management capacity. I traded day-to-day coding for project staffing, estimates, and status reporting. What I found here was an opportunity to try on the management hat with a team of engineers that I had spent time in the trenches with. Not only did I have a support structure in place, but also a team that had no problems calling me out when I needed frank feedback.• Supported business development efforts including client acquisition, requirement analysis, and estimates and proposals.• Built the Fox Sports Go Android TV application leveraging the BAMTech Media (now a part of Disney) streaming platform. Additionally, created a library for Fox to integrate streaming content into their other products. (the final contract gig I was assigned to)
  • Black Pixel
    Staff Developer, Android
    Black Pixel May 2014 - Oct 2017
    Seattle, Washington, United States
The Android landscape was changing at this point. Soup-to-nuts projects were becoming harder to find, but staff augmentation engagements were fairly consistent. This gave me an opportunity to experience how a number of different development teams (and companies) functioned. I was typically on the forefront of client interaction - especially when a number of folks were engaged on a contract. I also informally started performing some low-key management tasks: status reporting, checking in with folks, etc. Partially due to no one else wanting or being able to do so.• Worked in a staff augmentation capacity for Starbucks and The New York Times contributing to their flagship Android products.• Project lead for a rewrite of the Fox Business News Android application. Responsible for requirements analysis, task assignment for the team, and development of the UI, content rendering, advertisements, and analytics aspects of the app.
  • Martiancraft
    Android Engineering Manager
    Martiancraft Mar 2014 - May 2014
    Fairfax, Virginia, United States
After a merger with another development shop, the company was in a position to have full-time employees and was able to bring me aboard. While I was given the title of “manager,” I wasn’t particularly ready at the time …
  • Martiancraft
    Android Developer
    Martiancraft Dec 2010 - Mar 2014
    Fairfax, Virginia, United States
Two big firsts here that have influenced the trajectory of my career: diving into Android development and stepping away from a traditional office environment. Knowing Java well made the former a bit of an easier transition. Being organized and schedule-oriented helped the latter. This was fairly early in Android’s lifespan (~Eclair) and saw a ton of opportunities to build applications from the ground up for clients that didn’t have in-house mobile experience.• Contributed to the Android version of The Daily for News Corp, a daily digital periodical targeting tablets.• Developed the CBS Fantasy Baseball native Android app from the ground up for the 2012 season.• Implemented search functionality and provided developer oversight for ESPN and their flagship Android application.
  • Terrestar Networks
    Lead Engineer, Applications Development
    Terrestar Networks Aug 2007 - Dec 2010
    Reston, Virginia
This was my first experience with a startup company and, ultimately, the position turned out to be less development-centric than I was expecting (read: not at all). However, I did get my hands dirty with a bit of product ownership and project management which would serve me well down the line. Even though it wasn’t a part of my day-to-day role, I did pick up on aspects of pertinent cellular, satellite, and VoIP technologies.
  • Verizon
    Lead Software Engineer, Fios Tv
    Verizon Jan 2006 - Sep 2007
    Reston, Virginia
With the advent of Verizon’s fiber offering, a number of folks within the Internet Services group moved over to support television services. I was primarily focused on aspects of video on demand: video asset ingest, ad insertion, and content blackouts. A video-oriented NOC was established and my tools were in support of those engineers.
  • Verizon
    Software Engineer, Verizon Internet Services
    Verizon May 2001 - Jan 2006
    Reston, Virginia, United States
My first full-time position. I moved from independently creating small tools to working with a small group to build one pretty big sucker: a platform to automate the activation of a business-grade DSL service. Bits of order entry, inventory and resource management, network modeling and pathfinding, and automating router configuration. Give or take, the software was running for over a decade before it was sunset.20+ years later: I’m still pretty damn proud of this one.
  • Verizon
    Intern
    Verizon May 1999 - Jan 2001
    Reston, Virginia, United States
The beginning of my professional journey. From the start, I was always on the lookout for small tools and utilities that I could create to help out the Operation team with their daily grind. Parsing router configuration files to gather summary data was my first introduction to broader IP networking.
