Validation Engineer
Responsible for the commissioning of 3 gas-fired boilers and executing Cleaning Development and Validation protocols. Duties included:• Project drawings were updated to reflect as-built conditions. Old drawings must be amended to reflect new, moved, or removed equipment. All equipment must be labeled in the field according to new drawings.• Track Action items specified in the Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) Report and the Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR). Both documents contain tasks that ensure the boilers operate safely and the area around the boilers is safe for maintenance workers. These action items required coordination of specific personnel, including outside entities, to complete. • Assets were registered in site support systems. Equipment was registered in facilities systems to keep track of maintenance schedules and replacements parts.• Execute approved Development and Proof-of-Concept Protocols. Every step of cleaning and sanitization must be documented and verified to ensure accuracy and repeatability. • Equipment was tested after cleaning for traces of product or cleaning chemicals. Each piece of equipment was analyzed for several at-risk areas for insufficient cleaning. When new cleaning methods are used on this equipment, at-risk areas must be tested for any residue left behind. • Deviations that occurred during execution were investigated and resolved. Any resolution must be reviewed and approved by interdepartmental stakeholders.• Final Reports were written to summarize a protocol’s details and close the project. Final reports must be reviewed and approved by interdepartmental stakeholders.
Researcher
Designed, planned, and evaluated lab experiments in the development of solutions to be used in Microwave Ablation. Research focused the possibility to decrease the recurrence rate of cancer in patients after treatment. Responsibilities included:• Formulation and compounding of solutions, referred to as Thermal Accelerant (TA). TA variables included viscosity, pH, concentration of water, and concentration of salt.• Setup and execution of in vitro experiments. Variables included microwave frequency, microwave power, distance from microwave antenna, and number of microwave antenna. An antenna connected to the microwave generator was inserted into a jar of agarose. New TA solutions were placed in a well at a measured distance from the antenna. A thermocouple was placed into the TA. The microwave generator was run for 10 minutes per test, and the thermocouple exported the temperature every 15 seconds to a single point data logger.• Results were interpreted against a control and previous experiments. Rate of temperature increase, maximum temperature reached, and toxicity were 3 main criteria considered when interpreting results.• Solutions identified as successful from in vitro testing were chosen for in vivo testing. All in vivo testing was done in a porcine model, due to the side of ablation being observed. In vivo experiments took place in MRI, CT, or veterinary labs. Ultrasound was used as guidance for placement of microwave antenna and the TA. Treatment locations included the liver, kidneys and gluteal muscles. After several procedures and euthanization, an autopsy was done to calculate the volume of treated areas.Individual Contributions:• Developed new method of compounding TA to decrease preparation time.• Converted the output of the thermocouple to a USB connection to a personal computer.• Developed a MatLab program to automatically record thermocouple temperature and display in a Microsoft Excel file to decrease analysis time.
