On leaving ICI in 1984, he became an academic first at Loughborough University then at the UEA. He has invented a number of scientific instruments in the fields of Thermal Methods and Photothermal Spectroscopy that have been commercialized by various companies; one of the most well know is Modulated Temperature DSC which is now offered by all of the leading manufacturers of thermal analysis instruments. Currently he works with Cyversa on new analytical methods he has created.
