Calcium carbonate mineral reactions, and biocalcification in particular, are significant components of the world carbon budget and the rates of calcium carbonate mineral reactions in a range of natural settings requires further investigation. Research site locations have included: Florida Everglades; the Sleepers River Basin, Vermont; Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado; the Yukon River Basin, Alaska; The Las Vegas Valley, Pyramid and Big Soda Lakes, Nevada; the Amargosa Desert Research Site, near Beatty, Nevada and the Shingobee River Headwaters Area, north central Minnesota.Research at the USGS Toxics Program Amargosa Desert Research Site (ADRS), near Beatty, Nevada examines soil solution mineral phase supersaturation and kinetic factors that influence calcium carbonate mineral formation and dissolution rates in ADRS soils. Calcium carbonate crystallization is initiated and regulated, in large measure, by calcium carbonate supersatutration at nucleation and by the presence of growth rate inhibiting ions, such as magnesium ion in soil solution at the ADRS
