In this role I was mainly responsible for providing policy advice to the Auditor-General on the mandate of the audit office, and on risks and opportunities presented by requests and other matters raised in correspondence to the Auditor-General.

I joined the National Audit Office’s professional training programme and whilst studying for my accountancy qualification worked on a variety of financial and performance audits including reports on health, prisons, immigration, and the police. I qualified as a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountably in 1991.

Post graduation with an honours degree in Chemistry I took up a research grant and undertook research into the combustion properties of aromatic chemicals as possible alternatives to hydrocarbon fuels, which was published in a scientific journal.
