My research interests during more than 40 years in both the academic and corporate arenas have included: applications of low temperature in medicine and surgery; in vitro preservation of transplantable tissues; prevention of ischemic injury in vivo, with emphasis on hypothermic neuroprotection and myocardial preservation; mechanisms of cryoinjury in multicellular tissues with an emphasis on the development of ice-free methods of cryopreservation. These research activities have culminated in the publication of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and patents in the field of low temperature biology and medicine. My standing in the field was recognized in 2010 by award of the Luyet Medal and election as a Fellow of the international Society for Cryobiology, which is a peer appointment awarded to those who have demonstrated sustained life-long contribution to the science and field of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine. I am the inventor on record of successfully commercialized low temperature preservation solutions for mammalian tissues including Hypothermosol® (Marketed by Biolife Solutions Inc.) and Unisol® (Organ Recovery Systems, Inc.). I also played a major role in the development of the world leading organ transport system LifePort®. This FDA approved platform, now serving over 300 major transplant programs in 39 countries with over 112,000 clinical procedures successfully performed, allowed a successful IPO for Organ Recovery Systems, Inc. HypoThermosol® (HTS) and CryoStor® (HTS + Cryoprotectant) platform of solutions are proprietary solutions marketed by BioLife Solutions, Inc and are highly valued in the regenerative medicine, biobanking and drug discovery markets. These biopreservation media products are serum-free and protein-free, fully defined, and are formulated to reduce preservation-induced cell damage and death; offering commercial companies and clinical researchers significant improvement in shelf life and post-preservation viability and function (https://www.biolifesolutions.com/)

Founding Chief Science OfficerSylvatica Biotech, Inc. Jan 2015 - PresentSylvatica is developing a novel, non-toxic approach to biopreservation and biobanking including the storage of human organs to enable global organ matching and save millions of lives. We use the best strategies employed by freeze-tolerant and hibernating animals in nature and then augment with complementary strategies developed through recent scientific understanding, bioengineering principles and modern tools.Sylvatica Biotech, Inc was recently featured as a NIH success story (https://sbir.nih.gov/stories/sylvatica)See also www.nature.com/nbt/journal/v35/n6/full/nbt.3889.html and www.sylvaticabio.com

Senior Scientist (Part Time)Tissue Testing Technologies, Llc Jan 2015 - Apr 2019Charleston, South Carolina AreaThe primary focus of T3LLC is on low cost to market development of cryopreservation methods to provide human cell-based in vitro systems for high throughput screening purposes. T3 utilizes proprietary methods for preservation of human cell-derived monolayers and 3D cultures in multiwell plates. T3 is positioned to take advantage of the current trend away from animal testing for cosmetics, household chemicals and drugs by providing cryopreserved human cell-based tissue equivalents in place of current practice “just in time” manufacturing. The longer-term focus of T3LLC is research and development of ice-free cryopreservation methods for clinical applications. Such applications include major internal organs, larynx, trachea, abdominal wall, knee tissues, skeletal muscles, facial tissues and limb extremities, as well as critical natural and engineered tissues such as skin, heart valves and blood vessels.
