About Michael Hawtin

I'm a graduate product development and product marketing professional who, after a successful 15 year career in technology and telecoms took the decision to follow a lifelong passion and move into the cycling industry. Since 2007 I have created two successful businesses, held a regional cycling development position for a national cycling charity working with regional and national tourism bodies and more recently continued that work setting up a cycling friendly business network for the North York Moors National Park. I'm also a founder member of Newbridge Park Group in Pickering, a local volunteer group dedicated to giving something back to the cycling community.Gone Mountain Biking (formerly Big Bear Active) was established in 2007. The business offered a unique package of accommodation, guiding, skills instruction and cycle maintenence courses based from four star silver biker friendly bed and breakfast near Dalby Forest and the North York Moors. In 2008, I started Big Bear Bikes in a prime retail location with a number of key brands (including Trek). With partner funding the business grew quickly and gained a reputation for delivering quality products and services. Creating the brand as an extension of Big Bear Active (which became Gone Mountain Biking) and Big Bear Alpine family businesses. As a new start up I secured premises and key brand accounts including Trek. With investment secured through a business partner grew the business to a year two turnover of £350k before leaving to concentrate on existing and new business interests.Since stopping the holiday and training side of the businesses I have proved cycle tourism consultancy on a paid for and voluntary basis to help organisations develop cycle trails and cycle tourism strategies. I have worked with Visit England, Welcome to Yorkshire as well as local authorities and a large number of small local businesses.

Over a period of over 12 years the role involved:- managing and developing a multi skilled volunteer team- identifying and securing a number of funding streams - developing a local business sponsorship model- introducing an online user payment model- running community volunteer and fund raising events- introducing a program of regular trail inspection and repairs- partnering with other local organisations such as schools, cub/scout groups. orienteers, cycling clubs and mountain rescue to encourage wide and varied use of the site The facilities were developed to encourage a wider range of activities and a long term woodland management plan to reintroduce native species and increase biodiversity in a natural habitat .Facilities delivered included a cycling skills area designed to allow progression for beginners and advanced cyclists alike. In addition to the skills park we have developed a cross country trails loop and through consultation with local walking groups have improved footpaths and accessibility, installed seating and ensured that the woods were a place for residents and visitors to enjoy.The mission of Newbridge Park Ltd is: to deliver and encourage sustainable outdoor activity facilities in natural surroundings for the local community. The 100% not for profit volunteer group raises money through passes and yearly memberships to cover insurance and lease costs with the Duchy of Lancaster. We are always on the look out for like minded businesses who would like to become a business sponsor to help keep the site runningAs we like to say, 'Live Local, Ride Local'.
